A desperate search will resume for a missing infant after a mother and toddler were found dead along a regional coastline.

The 36-year-old woman and her two-year-old child were found in the ocean at Port MacDonnell, South Australia’s southernmost town about 30km from Mount Gambier on Monday.

Police were first alerted after an Isuzu SUV was found along the Limestone Coast with the engine still running about 11.15am.

Despite a multi-agency search — involving police, CFS and SES — scoured the coast for the infant child, they are yet to be located.

Those search efforts have been renewed on Tuesday morning, with police calling on the public for help.

A tow truck was seen transporting a vehicle of a similar description away from the scene.

“Shortly after, he noticed a second body which looked to be that of a small child,” Cox told media.

Cox said search teams hold “grave concerns” for the young child’s welfare.

“The child is less than one year old, in any conditions that would cause great concern about the child’s ability to survive, if not [just] in the water,” he said.

“We are keeping an open mind, but I don’t hold great hope.”

Detectives from Major Crime Investigation Branch and specialist forensic officers have travelled to the scene as the investigation intensifies.
