A bushwalker has died after plunging about 20 metres down a mountain with authorities reviewing whether delays in emergency response played a role in his death.

Emergency services were called to Mt Maroon, in the Scenic Rim, Queensland, on Sunday following reports a man in his 60s had fallen from a walking track.

A group of hikers reportedly found the man conscious and breathing and called Triple-0 about 9.30am.

Flight tracking data shows it was nearly 11am before a rescue helicopter departed from its base at Archerfield.

Mt Maroon is a popular but physically demanding hike, known for its steep climbs and rugged terrain.

Despite crews eventually reaching the remote location, sources have told 7NEWS the man’s condition deteriorated rapidly.

He is believed to have bled out before going into cardiac arrest.

The Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) confirmed it is now investigating the response.

In a statement, a spokesperson said the service is “conducting a review into this case” and “remains committed to delivering quality care”.

The review is expected to examine response times and whether any delays may have contributed to the man’s death.

It is unclear when the findings will be released.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
