Piper James’ parents touched down in Brisban
The grieving parents of a Canadian backpacker who was found dead on a popular tourist island have arrived in Australia to bring their daughter home.
Piper James, 19, was found dead surrounded by dingoes near the surf at the SS Maheno Wreck on K’gari, Queensland, about 6am on January 19, just an hour after she was believed to have gone for a swim.
Her parents Todd and Angela James touched down in Brisbane just after 8am on an Air Canada flight on Tuesday, accompanied by Piper’s best friend, Taylor, and other family members.
From there, they travelled to Rainbow Beach, the gateway to K’gari, where Piper had been working as a tour guide while exploring Australia since October.
The family is expected to attend a smoking ceremony with local Aboriginal elders on Wednesday morning at the shipwreck site, where Piper’s lifeless body was discovered surrounded by dingoes.
“To walk where she walked and try to feel her spirit,” Todd wrote on Facebook.

Authorities continue to investigate her death as the initial autopsy was inconclusive, finding physical evidence consistent with drowning and dingo bites.
Piper’s family plans to have her cremation in Brisbane before her remains are returned to British Columbia, Canada, where a celebration of life is set for February 28.
“We will return with Piper, back home to Canada. I ache for her last breath. Piper, you made us so proud. Love you so much. Not ready to say goodbye,” her father said earlier.
