Woman dies while hiking notorious Queensland mountain after calls for help heard.

Urgent calls for help have led to the discovery of a body of a hiker who died while climbing one of Queensland’s most notorious mountains.

Police said another hiker heard someone calling for help on Mount Tibrogargan in the Glasshouse Mountains National Park about 8.40am on Thursday.

Officers arrived at the base of the mountain soon after and began to search the area on foot.

Hovever, it wasn’t until several hours later that police found a woman dead about 10.30am.

Investigations are continuing into the death, police said.

Officers were seen examining a car found parked at the base of the mountain.

The 364m-high mostly vertical Mount Tibrogargan is often the scene of rescues and fatal falls, with dozens of callouts there each year.

It is considered one of the Sunshine Coast’s most treacherous mountains.

Queensland’s Department of Environment and Tourism warns people attempting to walk the summit routes must be well-prepared climbers with a high level of fitness and rock-scrambling experience.

“The summit routes have exposed, steep rocky sections and irregular surfaces with loose stones that require rock scrambling and climbing skills.,” it said.

“Serious injuries and deaths have occurred on summit routes.

“Rock falls may occur at any time. If you access the summit routes you need to be aware of the risks. Your safety is your responsibility.”

The death follows a double tragedy only last month, when a fall claimed the lives of two 18-year-olds at nearby Mount Beerwah.

The pair were part of a group of young people hiking together in the Glass House Mountains — a range of 11 volcanic peaks and rocky outcrops in the Sunshine Coast hinterland — when the tragedy occurred.
