Three dead in devastating Wiley Park house fire
Three people have been killed after a late-night house fire erupted in Sydney’s southwest.
Emergency crews were called to a home on Cornelia St in Wiley Park around 9.45pm on Wednesday after reports of a house on fire.
The blaze had reached the windows of the home by the time five fire trucks and 20 firefighters arrived, Fire and Rescue NSW said.
Crews forced their way through the property’s burning exterior extinguishing flames as they went, including on scaffolding and gardening trellis.
Three bodies, said to belong to a family who lived in the granny flat, were discovered and are believed to be those of a 52-year-old man, 42-year-old woman and a 16-year-old boy.
The family is yet to be formally identified.
Fire and Rescue NSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell attended the scene to offer support, and said investigations into the fire’s cause would be extensive.
“To lose three people in a fire like this is an absolute tragedy,” he said.
“It is devastating for the families of those people who were lost last night, it has a severe impact on the surrounding neighborhood and community in this area and also impacts the firefighters and other emergency responders who attended the scene.”
Fewtrell said fire investigators have worked through the night, and NSW police forensics officers will examine the scene, with the process of determining the cause and origin of the blaze still underway.
“We offer our condolences to the families of the victims of this terrible tragedy,” he said.
“This is a stark reminder of the dangers of home fires, particularly during the winter period.”
Fewtrell said cold spells “always see an increase in house fires” as he reminded people of the importance of having working fire alarms.
Officers from Campsie Police Area Command have since established a crime scene and an investigation has begun, NSW Police said.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
