Whoopi Goldberg, veteran actress and TV host, won’t be slowing down anytime soon. But people online can’t seem to figure out why not!

If you enjoy seeing Whoopi Goldberg on your big and small screens, then boy do we have good news for you. You’ll continue seeing “The Color Purple” actress working in Hollywood for a little while longer as she recently shirked off the idea of retiring from the industry— and the reason why is all too relatable and hilarious.

As you’re well aware, Goldberg has been a longtime working actress and comedian for at least the past three decades with her talents taking her from Broadway, comedy sets, to movie sets and beyond. Since joining ABC’s popular daytime talk show, “The View” in 2007, she’s become even more of household name and recognizable face in Hollywood and media at-large.

But even with her resume and EGOT-level status, it still isn’t enough for her to rake in enough money for her to sit on her laurels and she recently said as much during an interview with Entertainment Tonight this week. When asked if she’d given any thought to slowing down career-wise, Goldberg explained that while she’s considered it, she’s not in a financial state to do so and that because she didn’t marry a rich partner— slowing down won’t be in the cards for her in the near future.

“Yeah, but who can afford to do that? You know, if you don’t marry well, you gotta keep working,” she jokingly said while making it clear that she’s not at a place where she can give up her day job.

“I gotta keep paying those bills, baby,” she added.

However, though Goldberg may have been joking about not marrying rich, by the time her comments hit social media, many were quick to point out that she’d gone through not one, not two, but three marriages. They questioned why after all the accolades she amassed and three marriages— she managed to find herself without a rich husband or in a financial position to need one so she could retire in the first place.

“Damn times are hard Whoopi Goldberg said she can’t afford to retire ! What about the rest of us lol,” added another on X.

“If she can’t retire ‘cause she didn’t marry right, she has big issues. What about all the other people who did marry right and still can’t retire? Just to eat and pay the outrageous electric and water bills? She needs to seek help,” one user wrote on Yahoo.

“Whoopi Goldberg saying she can’t afford to retire all while having a net worth of $60M. Girl bye!” said another on X.

Added another on Yahoo: “Three marriages and missed the rich guy? Sounds like my mom, who sat on her stern propeller her whole life dreaming of marrying her ‘millionaire’ when the most middle-class guys did not want her.”
