Fans hail Brian De Palma’s adaptation as amongst the finest interpretations of Stephen King’s work, available to watch on Netflix until Thursday, 26th February.
The film in question is Carrie, drawn from King’s 1974 inaugural novel. Led by Academy Award winner Sissy Spacek, this teenage terror centres on the isolated schoolgirl Carrie White (Spacek).
Subjected to relentless tormenting from her peers and mistreatment from her mother Margaret (Piper Laurie), Carrie’s life takes an extraordinary turn when she discovers she possesses telekinetic abilities.
Following a particularly cruel stunt by her bullies, she unleashes her newly discovered powers in a bloddy act of vengeance on prom night.
Spacek’s portrayal garnered widespread critical acclaim upon release, earning her first Oscar nod for Best Leading Actress, reports the Mirror.

Laurie similarly received recognition in the Best Supporting Actress category, though neither actress secured victory.
While they missed out at the 1977 Academy Awards, Carrie received tremendous acclaim and swiftly established itself as a genre-defining classic.
The 1976 thriller commands an impressive 94% approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics, whose consensus particularly celebrates its unforgettable prom sequence, now firmly embedded in popular culture.
Cinemagoers were equally captivated, with one remarking: “Carrie is a lean, haunting blast of classic horror. Sissy Spacek’s performance is mesmerising, Brian De Palma’s direction is razor‐sharp, and the film builds to an iconic finale that still lands with real power. It’s stylish, emotional, and unforgettable.”

Another fan declared it their top King adaptation, stating: “Carrie not just become a disturbing, but became more horrifying and shocking dark twist teen horror movie.”
A third viewer enthused: “Carrie might be the ultimate high school horror revenge flick. Terrifying prom climax, shocking ending and of course the trademark De Palma shower scene opening credits!”
An IMDb user added: “Carrie was very creepy. It wasn’t a thrill-a-minute, but at the ending, that was Scary with a capital S. The last ten or twenty minutes were scare-inducing for sure.”
Carrie is available to stream on Netflix until February 26.
