The Sussexes didn’t have things mapped out it seems

eghan Markle has revealed she and Prince Harry had “no plan” when moving to the US, in a new interview with Fortune.

Meghan and Prince Harry took a huge leap of faith when they let go of their roles as working royals and jetted over the pond to settle down in California in 2020.

And it seems the couple had a pretty unconventional approach when totally uprooting their lives. The Duchess of Sussex has lifted the lid on her and Harry’s move to the US.

Meghan Markle on move to California with Prince Harry

Meghan candidly admitted at a summit in Washington D.C. yesterday that she did not have the “bandwidth” at that time to think about the “big picture” after moving to sun-soaked California with Harry.

It was here that she revealed that she and the Duke of Sussex had “no plan” despite making such a big move.

Meghan, 44, said at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women summit: “I think five years ago was a very different situation for all of us. Archie was so little and I had just got pregnant with Lili around that same time.

“So we were nesting. Nesting and healing. Also, I don’t know if I had the bandwidth at that time to think about what the ‘big picture’ dream was. There was no plan.

“It was just, ‘Let’s just get through these next couple of years’, create community, which was always so important to both of us in our new environment.”

Meghan went on to explain how she and Harry, 41, did find their footing in business and how they going into producing through their deal with Netflix – “creating projects that we felt were compelling”.

How Harry and Meghan built an empire

Discussing how this eventually panned out into a business, Meghan went on to explain: “Then I said, ‘OK, I’ve always loved being able to share, I’ve always loved being able to cook and entertain… is there a business here?’

“And I think it was probably most people’s assumption that if I was going to go into business it would be fashion and beauty.

“But those five years at home – I wasn’t running around wearing beautiful outfits, I was probably in Birkenstocks and sweats like the rest of us, especially during Covid, or just barefoot at home, but I was making a lot of jam.

“So it ended up becoming the thing that really was my passion project that I turned into a business.”

Of course, we now know that things did work out for Harry and Meghan.

They share a sprawling mansion in Montecito and work on a slew of projects, shared and separate. From Harry’s book deal, to the couple’s Archewell Productions company, to Meghan’s podcast ventures and more.

Meghan Markle’s latest projects

Most notably in recent months, Meghan has been gracing our screens on Netflix with her cooking and entertaining series, With Love, Meghan.

She has also been wowing fans with a string of luxury products within her new lifestyle brand, As Ever.

The couple recently renewed a huge multi-year deal with Netflix, following their reported $100m deal with the platform in 2020.

Meghan said in a statement upon their renewal in August: “My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally, and celebrates our shared vision.”
