When Donald Trump takes over an interview, even Fox & Friends can’t escape the unpredictability. On August 19, during what was supposed to be a hard-hitting conversation about Vladimir Putin, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and law-and-order in Washington, D.C., the former president shifted gears. Suddenly, the spotlight turned from geopolitics to gossip — specifically, the private romance between two of Fox News’ biggest stars: Sean Hannity and Ainsley Earhardt.
“There’s a guy named Sean Hannity,” Trump began, with his trademark mix of teasing and self-importance. “He might take a very lovely young lady that he knows very, very well to dinner in Washington and they don’t have to – she’s sitting right next to you, by the way – I don’t want to get him in trouble so I better explain exactly. We don’t want any secrets here.”
The “secret,” of course, was no secret at all. Hannity, 63, and Earhardt, 48, announced their engagement late last year. Yet Trump’s decision to bring it up — live, on-air, while Earhardt herself sat in the studio — was a masterclass in awkward television.
A Strange Interruption
The former president’s timing was as clumsy as it was revealing. Sandwiched between discussions of war and federal policing, Trump pivoted to play matchmaker-in-chief, calling the couple “great people” and joking that Washington, D.C. was finally safe enough for them to “hold hands” without being mugged.
“I also am not breaking any news,” Trump said with a grin. “This could be the most important thing I’ve said. But let me tell you, those are two great – Ainsley and Sean – great people. When they go out to dinner, I don’t want to see them get mugged.”
For a moment, the normally composed Fox & Friends cohost Lawrence Jones tried to steer the conversation back to politics, repeatedly attempting to interject. But Trump pressed on, even joking about wanting to know “who makes more money” in the relationship — a jab that landed with a thud as Jones abruptly changed the subject.
Viewers took to social media almost instantly, calling the exchange “uncomfortable,” “hilarious,” and “classic Trump.”
The Power Couple of Conservative Media
For months, Hannity and Earhardt’s relationship has been an open secret in conservative circles. Their engagement, announced to Fox colleagues in December 2023, capped years of speculation and subtle signals.
Hannity proposed at the couple’s home church, underscoring the shared faith that has defined their partnership. “We are overjoyed and so thankful to our families for all of their love and support during this wonderful time in our lives,” the pair told Fox at the time.
Earhardt, a cohost of Fox & Friends since 2016, is one of the most recognizable faces in morning television, while Hannity remains Fox’s undisputed primetime juggernaut. Together, they form what insiders often call the “first couple of Fox News.”
Trump himself amplified the announcement back in December, posting on Truth Social: “Great news about Sean and Ainsley. They are officially engaged to be married! There are no finer people than these, and there will be no finer couple. Congratulations to both – A deal made in HEAVEN!!!”
History and Exes
Both Hannity and Earhardt bring complicated personal histories to their union. Hannity divorced his first wife, Jill Rhodes, in 2019 after 26 years of marriage; they share two children. Earhardt divorced former Clemson quarterback Will Proctor the same year, with whom she shares a daughter. Her first marriage, to Kevin McKinney, ended in 2009.
Despite their high-profile pasts, the couple has insisted that their blended families remain supportive. “Everyone is supportive of each other,” they told Fox. “We actually made them aware this was happening ahead of time.”
Trump, Gossip, and Control
Why would Trump choose to bring up the romance so conspicuously — and awkwardly — during a serious interview? Analysts say it’s vintage Trump.
“Trump likes to dominate the conversation by mixing the personal with the political,” said media historian Kathryn Cramer Brownell. “By bringing up Hannity and Earhardt’s relationship, he not only lightens the mood but also reminds viewers that he sees himself as the ultimate insider. He knows the players, he knows the secrets — and he’ll reveal them on his terms.”
It’s also a reminder of the deep entanglement between Trump and Fox News. Hannity, one of Trump’s most loyal media allies, was a near-constant fixture in the White House during his presidency. By publicly blessing Hannity’s relationship, Trump positions himself as part of the couple’s story — effectively inserting himself into the personal narrative of Fox’s most powerful anchor.
Fox’s Tightrope
The moment also highlights the uncomfortable balancing act Fox faces. On one hand, Hannity and Earhardt’s relationship humanizes two of its biggest stars, adding a layer of relatability to their public personas. On the other hand, Trump’s live commentary on-air underscored how tightly Fox’s personalities remain intertwined with Trump himself — blurring the lines between journalism, entertainment, and political allegiance.
“Fox has built itself as both a news network and a family drama,” said former CNN anchor Brian Stelter. “The Hannity-Earhardt romance is a love story. Trump’s interruption turned it into a spectacle.”
The Awkward Future
For Hannity and Earhardt, Trump’s awkward congratulations may be a reminder that nothing in their personal lives will remain personal for long. As two of the most recognizable faces in conservative media, their every move will be dissected — whether in gossip columns or in presidential interviews.
Still, Trump’s clumsy praise may have done what it always does: ensured people are talking. About Hannity, about Earhardt, and, above all, about Trump himself.
Because if there’s one rule in Trumpworld, it’s this: every conversation, no matter how personal or political, eventually comes back to him.
