The Defense Department, meanwhile, insists the ex–Fox News host isn’t going anywhere.

In a year where political absurdity has become the norm, few figures encapsulate the era better than Pete Hegseth, Trump’s embattled—and some say untouchable—Secretary of Defense. In just six months on the job, Hegseth has managed to redefine what it means to survive a scandal. In a different time, even one incident involving leaking classified military plans via text to civilians would have been enough to end a political career in disgrace.
But 2025 isn’t your grandfather’s Washington.
Now, it seems, scandal is merely a stepping stone. And for Hegseth, the next step? A run for Governor of Tennessee.
According to an exclusive NBC News report, two individuals who’ve spoken directly with Hegseth confirm he’s “seriously” exploring a gubernatorial bid in the Volunteer State. One source described their chat as “not just hypothetical—it felt like the beginning of a campaign strategy session.” The other insider didn’t give a precise timeline but confirmed the conversation happened after Hegseth took over at the Pentagon.
Let’s pause here.
This is the same Pete Hegseth whose tenure has been riddled with enough controversies to rival a full season of House of Cards. There were not one, but two Signalgate fiascos. There was the alleged use of lie-detector tests on Pentagon staffers—yes, lie-detectors. Not to mention, an ongoing investigation the Pentagon refuses to comment on, dismissing media coverage as “months-old workplace gossip.”
But instead of damage control, Hegseth appears to be in control—of his political future, that is.
In typical Trump-era fashion, the White House seems unfazed. Politico sources claim the former president still backs Hegseth fully. “The boss loves him,” one Trump ally confessed. “So it’s like, ‘We’ll make it work.’” That chilling phrase—make it work—might explain why Hegseth hasn’t been shown the door despite an internal environment one staffer labeled as “the crème de la crème of dysfunction.”
And while the Pentagon doubles down, calling NBC’s story “fake news” and questioning the very existence of their anonymous sources, the silence from Trump-world is… notable.
Even Tennessee GOP chairman Scott Golden was caught off guard. “Nobody has called to talk about this as a reality,” he told NBC. “I don’t know where it’s coming from, and maybe it will be real.” In political speak, that’s practically an invitation.
So what’s the play here?
Could Hegseth be testing the waters? Floating the idea to allies and media, waiting to see how deep the backlash (or support) runs? If so, it’s a dangerous—but calculated—strategy. After all, Tennessee has become a proving ground for MAGA loyalists, and Hegseth, with his cable-news polish and hard-right credentials, fits the mold.
But there’s one glaring issue: the scandals just won’t stop.
Sources close to the Department of Defense whisper about morale plummeting and staffers fearing surveillance. Others say the culture under Hegseth has turned “toxic,” citing abrupt firings and high turnover. Rumors even swirl of a mysterious burner phone scandal yet to be exposed—one that could tie back to a foreign intelligence leak. (No comment from the Pentagon, naturally.)
Despite all this, Hegseth’s confidence seems unshaken.
He’s still making appearances on Fox News. He’s still showing up at rallies. And if the tea leaves are to be believed, he’s dead serious about a run for governor.
Is it ego? Is it a calculated bid to stay relevant? Or is it something darker—an awareness that, in today’s political climate, scandal no longer disqualifies you. It qualifies you.
One veteran journalist put it best: “Hegseth isn’t surviving the scandals. He’s feeding on them.”
As Tennessee eyes its next political cycle, one thing is clear: the Pete Hegseth saga isn’t over—it’s just getting started.
Stay tuned.
