Sky Sports presenter Martin Brundle has issued a heartfelt apology to Lewis Capaldi after inadvertently snubbing the Scottish singer during his famous pre-race grid walk at the Singapore Grand Prix.

The awkward yet humorous moment, which quickly went viral, saw Brundle mistake Capaldi’s brother for the chart-topping musician before accidentally turning away mid-handshake.

The exchange began in typically chaotic fashion as Brundle approached Capaldi’s brother, Anthony, on the grid and enthusiastically declared: “Lewis, wonderful to see you.”

Anthony politely corrected him, replying, “I’m his brother”, prompting a good-natured laugh from Brundle as the real Lewis Capaldi appeared moments later to rescue the situation.

“I’m sorry, he’s got a cap on,” Brundle said through laughter before greeting the singer with, “How are you, how are you both?”

Capaldi, who performed on the Padang Stage ahead of Sunday’s race, took the mix-up in stride.

“Very nice to meet you, a big fan,” he told Brundle, before revealing that his brother was the bigger Formula One enthusiast.

“He’s here supporting McLaren,” Capaldi joked, pointing to Anthony.

Brundle playfully replied: “So he’s the musician and you are the driver?

Anthony responded, while laughing: “I’m just a guy who’s here, that’s all.”

But the light-hearted encounter ended with a now-infamous moment of miscommunication.

As the interview concluded, Capaldi went to shake Brundle’s hand, only for the broadcaster — listening to instructions through his earpiece — to turn away to camera, leaving Capaldi’s hand awkwardly outstretched.

Ever the good sport, the singer quipped, “I’ll hold that” before shaking his own hand and walking off laughing with his brother.

Later, he posted the clip to social media with the caption, “b***hed by Brundle,” earning millions of views within hours.

Brundle, a veteran broadcaster and former F1 driver, soon took to social media to apologise for the accidental snub.

“Sincere apologies Lewis,” he wrote.

“I turned around to the camera with an urgent three-second count going on in my ears to wind up for the national anthem.

“Had no idea you were trying to shake my hand. A cardinal sin on my part, which I hope to put right one day. Hope you enjoyed F1.”

Fans were quick to praise Capaldi’s sense of humour and Brundle’s good-natured response, calling it another “classic grid walk moment” from the long-time Sky Sports pundit.

Capaldi, who appeared unbothered by the incident, later thanking Singapore for an “amazing night” following his performance.

His older brother Anthony, who Brundle initially mistook for him, is an actor from Glasgow who made his television debut in the 2020 BBC Scotland film Haggis after being scouted while working in their father’s fishmonger.

On the track, Mercedes’ George Russell converted pole position into victory, finishing ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and McLaren’s Lando Norris.

The result tightened the Drivers’ Championship standings, with Norris closing the gap to team-mate Oscar Piastri to just 22 points.
