On Saturday night, Post Malone and Jelly Roll lit up a sold-out Gillette Stadium with their infectious energy and humor, showing off their range in vocal abilities — and outsize personalities.
Post Malone’s “Big Ass Stadium Tour” is his first stadium tour, and he chose Jelly Roll to accompany him. The two collaborated on the song “Losers” on Post Malone’s new album “F-1 Trillion.” After his opening act, Jelly Roll came back on stage to sing the song with Post.
Chandler Walters, Post Malone’s steel-guitar player, also performed as a special guest as the first act.
Jelly Roll leans on humor, and God
Jason “Jelly Roll” DeFord opened the concert, entertaining the audience with his humor and his warm, twangy vocals. The country artist is well known for his songs “Son of a Sinner” and “Need a Favor.”
His humor was unexpected but very much appreciated by the Gillette crowd. Jelly Roll wore a Patriots hat, which he took note of about halfway through his performance. He is originally from Tennessee and admitted to being a Titans fan, which brought on a litany of boos from the audience. But he did say that he met Pats owner Robert Kraft and coach Mike Vrabel, and they were so nice it convinced him to wear the hat. He did add that he’ll never wear it again, though.
Jelly Roll had a moment where he said that “music is magical” and encouraged the crowd to check their problems at the gates and just enjoy the music of the night.

He talked a lot about God and Heaven in his performance, emphasizing the faith that many of his songs revolve around. “Can we turn this stadium into a church for a second?” he asked before playing the song “Hard Fought Hallejulah.”
Jelly Roll did several covers during his set, including a mashup that began with “Sweet Home, Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, “How You Remind Me” by Nickelback, “Party Up” by DMX, “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus, and finally “Young, Wild & Free” by Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa.
This mashup was an example of his range as he talked about all the different kinds of music he enjoys listening to. He told a story before the mashup about how he heard his 17-year-old daughter listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd and Prince on her own, which made him think, “I must be doing this dad thing alright.”
He ended by thanking Post Malone for inviting him to join the tour and how he never thought he would be part of something like it. An ex-convict who’s done work helping to rehabilitate prison inmates, Jelly Roll expressed how he thought at this point of life he would’ve been dead or in jail. He thanked the audience for listening, which he said helped him to end the cycle.
Post Malone weaves stories among the songs
Austin Richard Post, or Post Malone, had an impressive show, performing for two hours on the slippery stage.
“If I fall, you are not allowed to make fun of me,” he said.
He was larger than life as he performed a mix of his new and old songs. His stage was set up in the theme of his newer material, which leans less on the hip-hop/pop that made him famous and more towards the country genre, with the stage as a road with a stop sign and an illuminated “Route 66.” He also had two lit-up cowgirls moving their arms on both sides of the stage.
He came out with fire and fireworks as he first sang “Texas Tea.”
Although not a professional dancer, he wasn’t afraid to move, and the audience followed suit. He looked like he was having fun on stage, which is always refreshing. (Although Jelly Roll might have had more fun when he pretended to ride a horse.)

Clearly a chatty guy, Post Malone introduced many of his songs, and explained either what he was feeling when he wrote the song or what prompted the idea.
Some of the explanations were more in depth, such as for the song, “Yours.” His daughter recently turned 3, but the song came from the idea of walking her down the aisle on her wedding day. Meanwhile, some other explanations were brief: “Now this song is about a car,” he said before singing “Candy Paint.”
Post’s range was impressive: He had plenty of fun, upbeat songs where he let loose into the microphone, while on other songs he slowed down and felt the music — most impressively on one of his rare emotional ballads, “I Fall Apart.”
He had an acoustic set, where he brought up a surprise guest: country star Sara Evans. She was wearing a Dallas jersey that got a lot of boos, prompting Post to also poke fun at the Patriots. “Is six not enough for you guys?” he asked, referring to the six Super Bowl rings that New England has accumulated.
Evans said she’d played with Post at Fenway and TD Garden, but being up on the stage at Gillette was “terrifying.” She played guitar as Post sang “Feeling Whitney.”
Post Malone proved a master at getting the audience fired up: He threw out questions to the crowd and encouraged fans to raise their cups before he sang “Pour Me a Drink.”
He ended on a sentimental note, thanking the audience for listening to him make music for the past 10 years. He also gave a final word of advice: “As long as you ain’t hurting nobody, keep being yourself.”
