*Jamal Roberts, the soulful singer from Meridian, Mississippi, captured hearts across the country and made history as he was crowned the newest winner of “American Idol.”
In a milestone moment, the 27-year-old father and physical education teacher became the second Black man to win the title in the show’s two-decade run, a fact he hadn’t realized until told backstage after the finale.
“I made history?” he asked, surprised, per PARADE. “That’s good to know. That’s really good to know.”
Roberts’ victory comes 22 years after Ruben Studdard won in 2003, marking a long-overdue moment of recognition for another powerhouse Black male vocalist. Fresh off his win, Roberts stopped by Good Morning America to perform his debut single “Heal” and share reflections on his journey. Watch the clip above.
Speaking to PEOPLE after the May 18 finale, Roberts kept things lighthearted when asked about his immediate plans, simply saying, “I’m going to take a nap.”
Roberts also recalled a memorable moment from earlier in the season when fellow contestant Breanna Nix, who finished third, confidently predicted his victory. At the time, he brushed it off, saying, “Girl, hush,” but now he’s amazed by how right she was, remembering her words: “You’re anointed… you’re going to win this.”
Following Roberts’ win, judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie shared high praise for the rising star. Bryan, who previously said he had a “gut feeling” about Roberts, admitted he was rooting for him. Bryan said Roberts stood out for his emotional depth and vocal strength. “He really moves me. I am really a fan of him,” he added.

Richie echoed the enthusiasm, saying Roberts has limitless potential and could easily pivot into any genre, even country. Reflecting on the finale, Richie also noted the symbolic power of Roberts and the runner-up John Foster standing side by side, calling it “the picture I was hoping for” and a reminder of America’s diversity.
Despite his newfound fame, Roberts says he has no intention of leaving his beloved hometown. It’s where his daughters, Harmoni, Lyrik, and newborn GiannaGrace live, and it’s where he feels truly at peace.
“I love my city. There’s no traffic. I don’t wait in line to eat. I love my life,” he shared, per PARADE.
As for what’s next, Roberts says he’s going to “keep singing and keep moving souls, keep making people happy, and keep being Jamal.”
