Taking to his Instagram stories, John said: “Last night I got run over (seriously).
“I rolled up the bonnet damaging it and the windscreen, before splatting onto the road and crawling to the pavement where some angel of a human threw his coat around me and waited with me for an ambulance.”
He went on: “The doctors said ‘thank god you’re 16 stone of muscle because it could have been fatal’.
“Moral of the story: build strong muscle and core strength, and don’t wear black while crossing the road in the dark when an idiot comes speeding without looking…
“I’ve been scanned and poked and prodded and I’m ok.”
John later took to Instagram to say how the incident was “sudden and shocking”.
He also clarified how he used the term ‘speeding’ figuratively.
John appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in its 19th series in 2021.
During his stint on the show, John was paired with Johannes Radebe where they made history as the show’s first male same-sex couple.
Together, the pair reached the final and finished as runners-up
Strictly was not John’s first stint on reality television because he shot to fame in 2012 on The Great British Bake Off.
In 2012 John competed in the third series of The Great British Bake Off when it aired on BBC Two.
During the sixth episode of the series John sadly sustained a major injury to his finger and could not complete the last bake.
After making it through to the final, he won the show and lifted the iconic cake stand.
John resides in Leeds with his husband Paul Atkins, who works as a graphic designer.
The pair revealed their engagement in July 2017 and got married in a surprise ceremony in New York in January 2024.
Speaking to Gay Times last year, John opened up about his marriage.
He said: “The thing that I’m most proud of in my life, without a shadow of a doubt, is the fact that my husband and I have been through 18 years of togetherness.
“When we got married we had all the mentions of ‘I give myself to you’ taken out of the script.
“There was no ownership involved in our wedding vows. We’re growing as individuals but side by side like two strong oak trees.
“I think that is the thing I’m most proud of, that I get to experience a relationship that is founded on mutuality and sincere respect for one another”
