“I’m proud of this one on many levels,” James shared in a statement. “The production feels like it really lets the story stand on its own.”

Greylan James is putting a new twist on a wedding song with his latest track, “Water At A Wedding.” Written alongside Chase McGill and Matt Dragstrem and produced by Jason Massey, this tune isn’t one that’s bound to make the cut for wedding dances everywhere, but it certainly is a fitting match for radio play and a strong contender for award wins.

“Water At A Wedding” puts country storytelling in the front seat as James unravels the emotionally-packed narrative of a love triangle situation, where he’s a heartbroken individual that reluctantly attends the wedding of an ex-lover.

Well, I didn’t want to show up / But our families go way back,” James sings the opening lines of the track, grabbing the listener and setting the scene before revealing that the bride’s glass of water has caught his eye. From there, James paints a picture of small-town troubles as he shares his hunch that the wedding happened as a way to cover up the impending birth of the bride’s expected baby.

Backed by a relaxed and dreamy country/R&B melody, James sings, “You’re drinking water at your wedding, girl / Ain’t no bubbles up in that drink / If I’m a betting man I’m betting, girl / You’re scared to death of what this small town would think / Well, I think them tears ain’t happy tears / I think you don’t love him at all / I think that two pink lines appeared / Now you can’t have no alcohol / Daddy’s shotgun and your momma’s pearls / Drinking water at your wеdding, water at your wedding, girl.

It’s almost as if James couldn’t throw in any more curveballs, but he does just that. Delivering a shocking bridge that will have folks replaying “Water At A Wedding” over and over, he draws up suspicion that he may just be the father of the bride’s unborn baby.

About 2 a.m. / Two months ago you showed up drunk at my place / Started tearing off clothes / Now we ain’t talked about it since / But sitting here, I’m thinking / What if I’m the reason that you’re up there drinking / Water at your wedding, girl,” James sings. “I guess we’ll know in time / If I’m a betting man I’m betting, girl / Your secret’s gonna have my eyes…”

“Water At A Wedding” certainly keeps listeners on their toes, waiting to hear what’s next, but James has yet to reveal whether or not he’ll introduce a “Water At A Wedding” part 2. Regardless, in a press release, he shared that he is so “proud of this [song] on many levels.”

“The production feels like it really lets the story stand on its own,” James added of the subtle percussion, light acoustic guitars, and R&B elements. “And the content around it, that was a process of its own. My entire team crushed it on the rollout of this one, and seeing people’s reaction to every piece of this song has been amazing.”

“Wrote this song about going to my ex’s wedding,” James captioned one Instagram clip, which features him singing a few of the song lyrics while playing on an acoustic guitar.
