The Disney-to-Netflix licensing pipeline is showing no signs of slowing down in 2026. We have learned that the long-running, Emmy-nominated sitcom Black-ish from Kenya Barris is the next major ABC title set to drop on the service in the United States for a limited time.
Following the successful addition of other Disney-owned properties like Lost, Prison Break, and How I Met Your Mother over the last couple of years, it appears Netflix isn’t done. Netflix has secured the non-exclusive streaming rights to the Johnson family saga. The series, until now, has mostly streamed exclusively on Hulu and Disney+.
We’re expecting all 8 seasons (176 episodes) of Black-ish to be available on Netflix US starting Saturday, January 31st, 2026. Should the number of seasons change, we’ll keep you posted. The show’s availability on Hulu and Disney+ is not expected to be impacted.
What is Black-ish about?
Created by Kenya Barris, the series originally aired on ABC from 2014 to 2022. It centers on Andre “Dre” Johnson, an upper-middle-class advertising executive who worries that his family’s assimilation into their predominantly white, wealthy neighborhood has caused them to lose touch with their Black culture.
Barris, as you may know, jumped to Netflix for a period under a lucrative overall deal, although he didn’t produce much for Netflix. His biggest success was the movie You People, starring Jonah Hill and Eddie Murphy. His big show for Netflix was #BlackAF, which ran for a single season, and he produced Entergalactic, We The People, and Astronomy Club: The Sketch Show.
Over its eight-season run, the show was praised for its ability to balance traditional sitcom humor with poignant commentary on sociopolitical issues, including police brutality, the history of Juneteenth, and the complexities of modern identity.
The official synopsis reads:
“Dre Johnson (Anthony Anderson) has it all: a great job, a beautiful wife, Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross), four kids, and a colonial home in the ‘burbs. But has success brought too much assimilation for this Black family? With a little help from his dad (Laurence Fishburne), Dre sets out to establish a sense of cultural identity for his family that honors their past while embracing the future.”

Who is in the cast?
The show features a powerhouse ensemble cast:
Anthony Anderson as Dre Johnson.
Tracee Ellis Ross as Dr. Rainbow “Bow” Johnson (a role that won her a Golden Globe).
Yara Shahidi as Zoey Johnson (who spun off into Grown-ish).
Marcus Scribner as Andre Johnson Jr.
Miles Brown as Jack Johnson.
Marsai Martin as Diane Johnson.
Laurence Fishburne as “Pops.”
Jenifer Lewis as Ruby Johnson.
Will the spinoffs be included?
Currently, the deal only covers the main series, Black-ish.
The popular college-set spinoff Grown-ish and the prequel Mixed-ish remain on Hulu and Disney+ for the time being. However, given how often these licensing deals expand (we recently saw the Walking Dead spinoffs follow the main show), it’s possible we could see the extended “ish” universe arrive later in the year.
Will you be re-watching the Johnsons this January? Let us know in the comments below and keep it locked here for the complete list of what’s coming up on Netflix throughout January.
