Prince Harry’s real reasons for wanting to return to the UK have been laid bare by a royal expert. Daily Mail diary editor Richard Eden was discussing Harry’s ongoing legal case about automatic taxpayer-funded security for the prince and his family when they visit the UK in the publication’s Palace Confidential podcast.

Mr Eden said it was a “big thing” for Harry and pointed to the government ordering a fresh review of his security arrangements. Asked what has changed since the Sussexes lost their taxpayer-funded security, Mr Eden said: “Well, I think what has changed is that Harry and Meghan do intend to come back.

“Harry wants to live in Britain again. I’m not saying permanently or anything, but I’m talking about spending much more time here and having some sort of resident status.”

The Mail’s diary editor pointed to his own previous report that Harry wants Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to be educated in the UK and Establishment efforts to ease their return, which was dubbed “Project Thaw” among those involved, according to Mr Eden. He described such moves as a “plot” which was gathering pace.

He told Palace Confidential: “[Harry] loves life in California in many ways, but he’s got old attachments here. He’s involved with charity patronages and he’s really keen for his kids to grow up here.”

The royal expert suggested Harry also wants to spend more time in the UK as his father, King Charles, is still being treated for cancer.

His comments come after The Sun reported that the Home Office has ordered a fresh threat assessment, with the last such measure carried out in 2020, the year Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, left the UK.

Harry reportedly wrote to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood shortly after her appointment and submitted a formal request for a risk assessment to the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC), which is overseen by the Home Office, a source close to the Duke said in October.

The Duke of Sussex lost an appeal in May challenging the dismissal of his High Court claim against the Home Office over RAVEC’s decision he should receive a different degree of taxpayer-funded protection when in the UK.

The legal challenge came after Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, left the UK and moved to North America after announcing they wanted to step back as senior royals.

The Duke said the Court of Appeal decision meant it was “impossible” for him to bring Meghan and their children, Archie and Lilibet, back to the UK safely.

During Harry’s last visit to the UK in September, a “known stalker” came “within feet” of him on two occasions, according to a report in The Telegraph.

RAVEC has now instructed its Risk Management Board to reassess his threat level, according to The Sun.
