Jamal Roberts kept fans guessing about his relationship status throughout his journey on “American Idol.” But since winning season 23 on May 18, 2025, the R&B singer has confirmed he’s single in multiple interviews.
So what kind of woman is he looking for? Between Roberts’ skyrocketing success and his role as a doting dad to three daughters, Roberts, 27, said on “The Love You Moore Show” that his perfect partner will be someone who “understands” his unique situation.
Jamal Roberts Says His Next Love Needs to Understand He’ll ‘Do Anything’ For His Kids

Roberts was open throughout his time on “American Idol” about how much he loves being a girl dad to his daughters Harmoni, 7, and Lyrik, 4. They appeared on the show multiple times, flying to Los Angeles with family members from Meridian, Mississippi, to cheer on their dad.
A little over a week before Roberts won “American Idol,” he stunned fans by announcing on the show that he’d just become a dad to a third daughter, Gianna Grace. He didn’t get to meet the baby until his hometown visit as part of the top three, but has loved being with her whenever he’s had a chance to be home.
During a May 30 appearance on “The Morning Hustle,” co-host Lore’l asked if he had his girls with the “same woman,” to which he said matter-of-factly, “No.” When she prodded further, asking if he was single, he nodded emphatically, telling her, “I am very much single. Very much single.”
On June 2, when “Love You Moore Show” host Willie Moore Jr. asked Roberts what he’s looking for in a partner now, the singer responded, “I’m looking for a woman who understands, that’s not quick to this-and-that, not quick to judge. Understand the relationship I have with my kids, and understand that my kids are my life and they are my world. And I’m gonna do anything I can for my kids.”
“But also, (I want someone) to be there, to be a rock, you know?” Roberts continued. “Not saying, ‘Be a housewife,’ I’m not saying that. I’m just saying be those things that I need.”
“In this journey, a lot of obstacles are gonna come,” Roberts said of the music industry, “and one thing I don’t need is the person that I’m trusting and the person that’s on my side looking at me strange because of some outdoor stuff, you know what I’m saying? Keep it at home.”
“We supposed to be like this,” he said, crossing his fingers. “We supposed to be locked and loaded, you know what I’m saying? Don’t let none of that outside stuff (in).”
Jamal Roberts Says He’ll Always Be Honest With His Partner, But Doesn’t Always Want to Be ‘Touchy Feely’
Roberts told Moore Jr. that one way he’ll build trust in his next relationship is to be consistently honest about every mistake or misstep, ensuring she never has any need to pay attention to or question outside sources and rumors.
“I’m very vocal, I’m very vocal,” Roberts insisted. “If I did something, I’ll tell you I did it. You know, if something happened, I say, ‘Hey, it happened.’ But if it didn’t come out of my mouth, I didn’t do it. That’s my story, I’m sticking with it. But you know, let’s lock in.”
One caveat? Roberts admitted he does not want to be with someone who’s always “so touchy feely,” telling Moore Jr. that “sometimes I need my space.”
“I like to go fishing, I like to play basketball, do all the outside stuff you know?” Roberts explained. “She ain’t got to be up under me all day if she don’t want to. I’m gonna give you your space, you give me my space.”
“That don’t mean we going outside and doing what we don’t have no business doing,” Roberts added. “You know what I’m saying? We always know where home at, come back home now.”
One other thing Roberts didn’t mention is that his future special someone might need to get used to life in his hometown of Meridian, where he has said he is perfectly content staying no matter how high his star rises.
In fact, after spending the weekend at the BET Awards in Los Angeles, where he performed onstage with Kirk Franklin, Roberts wrote in a post, “Somebody asked me what was wrong with me; I said I’m missing Mississippi. Thankyou BET everything was amazing lol but your boy ready to go home ✍🏿😎”
