Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are on their way to New York to attend the World Mental Health Day Gala, organised by Project Healthy Minds.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to receive the nonprofit’s Humanitarians of the Year Award on October 9.

Harry and Meghan will be awarded for their “meaningful contributions to advancing mental wellbeing worldwide”, especially with young people.

The Sussexes have collaborated extensively with Project Healthy Minds in the past.

In 2023, the couple spoke onstage at The Archewell Foundation Parents’ Summit: Mental Wellness in the Digital Age during Project Healthy Minds’ World Mental Health Day Festival.

The summit focused on mental health and social media, featuring parents who had lost children due to online harms, and also included the display of the Archewell Foundation’s Lost Screen Memorial.

The foundation’s Parents’ Network was also introduced at the event.

After the organisation announced Harry and Meghan would be receiving the nonprofit’s Humanitarians of the Year Award this year, the Sussexes released a joint written statement.

It read: “Working with families and young people to prioritize safety online has been some of the most meaningful work of our lives.

“As parents ourselves, we have been moved to action by the power of their stories and are honored to support them.

“We’re proud to be long-time partners of Project Healthy Minds as we work together to shine a light on what remains one of the most pressing issues of our time.”

Phillip Schermer, the CEO and founder of Project Healthy Minds, called it a “privilege” to be able to honour the duke and duchess.

The award ceremony comes less than a week after Meghan, 44, travelled to France for Paris Fashion Week.

The Duchess of Sussex rubbed shoulders with Anna Wintour and Baz Luhrmann at a Balenciaga event.

In addition, Prince Harry, 41, suffered a blow on Tuesday when a critical letter issued by the Government of Chad targeted a charity with which the Duke of Sussex is closely linked.

The country’s environment minister, Hassan Bakhit Djamous, accused Africa Parks of financial misconduct and “disrespect”.

Prince Harry is among the charity’s board members, having been involved with the organisation since 2016.

In a four-page letter, Mr Djamous accused Africa Parks of demonstrating “a recurring indelicate and disrespectful attitude” towards his Government.

The Duke of Sussex was President of the charity for six years before joining its board in 2023.

Africa Parks looks after more than 20 protected national parks and reserves in 13 countries on behalf of their Governments.
