BBC Breakfast viewers were delighted to see one of the show’s presenters return after being absent for a few weeks

BBC Breakfast’s Carol Kirkwood wasted no time in offering co-star Sally Nugent a heartfelt welcome as she returned to the cherished programme.

The experienced broadcaster, 54, who typically fronts BBC Breakfast from Monday to Wednesday alongside Jon Kay, had been conspicuously missing over recent weeks, with various presenters filling in during her absence.

Whilst no official explanation had been provided on-air regarding Sally’s disappearance, the presenter made her triumphant comeback to our television screens on Tuesday morning (August 26).

Sally resumed her presenting responsibilities alongside co-host Jon Kay, as the pair once again delivered the day’s leading news stories from the famous red sofa.

Nevertheless, when the duo went live to Carol, who was prepared to launch into her regular weather segment, she swiftly turned her focus to Sally, confessing: “It’s great to have you back, Sal.”

Sally appeared delighted to return to the programme, responding: “Thank you. It’s lovely to be back.”

Further into the broadcast, Jon also delivered an affectionate message to his colleague, saying: “It’s lovely to have you back.” Sally beamed broadly as she responded: “Aw, it’s lovely to be back.”

Viewers at home were thrilled by her comeback, and they took to social media platforms to express their enthusiasm. One fan posted on X: “Sally looks nice and tanned after her holiday #bbcbreakfast.”

Another remarked: “@BBCBreakfast Welcome back, Sally #BBCBreakfast.” Meanwhile, a third viewer added: “It’s great to have Sally back.”

This follows fellow BBC Breakfast presenter Ben Thompson revealing live on air that one of the programme’s guests was battling cancer.

During Monday’s (August 25) programme, Ben and Luxmy Gopal spoke with postman John Wilkins regarding the BBC’s Make a Difference Awards, a ceremony celebrating people who positively influence others’ lives.

The presenters welcomed John, who had received a nomination for an award. Nevertheless, matters took an unexpected turn when Ben disclosed that John wasn’t merely a community stalwart but was also confronting leukaemia.

Ben enquired: “John, am I right in saying you’re waiting for medical treatment?”. John confirmed: “I do, yeah, I have been diagnosed with leukaemia.

“You’re doing all of this extra stuff, looking after these other people, and you’re still waiting for treatment yourself,” Ben pointed out. “When are you having that? Do you know yet?”

“I have platelet transfusions regularly, but I need to have a bone marrow transplant and stem cells,” John revealed.

“And for that, you need to have a perfect match, and at the moment, they haven’t been able to find a perfect match.”John disclosed that the nearest match they had located was somebody living in Japan. “A long way away,” Ben remarked before praising John: “You are brilliant.”
