Fallon Faces Backlash for Gutfeld Interview

Jimmy Fallon was accused of “groveling to the MAGA media machine” for hosting Fox News personality Greg Gutfeld on The Tonight Show last week. Many viewers criticized the NBC host for giving a prominent platform to someone known for racially charged humor and conspiracy theories.
“Fallon has always been a ‘yes to everyone’ man. The guy’s got almost zero convictions,” wrote one viewer online, highlighting the controversy that quickly spread across social media.
Ratings Surge Despite Criticism
Despite the backlash, the episode proved to be a ratings success. The Thursday broadcast averaged 1.71 million viewers, making it the most-watched regular Tonight Show episode since December 19, 2023, according to LateNighter citing Nielsen ratings. While higher numbers have been recorded for episodes following football games or the Olympic opening ceremony, the viewership represented a 57% increase over the show’s 2025 average.
LateNighter noted that Gutfeld likely “brought his Fox News audience with him,” and that while the Jonas Brothers may have also contributed, audience numbers spiked particularly during Gutfeld’s segment.
Viral Video Performance
The interview clip has quickly become the most-watched video on The Tonight Show’s YouTube channel over the last several days, far surpassing other segments. Interestingly, Fallon and Gutfeld avoided political topics in their friendly conversation, yet the pairing alone proved enough to generate intrigue, discussion, and online engagement.
Gutfeld Praises Fallon

Following the appearance, Gutfeld spoke on his own show about the experience, praising Fallon for showing “guts” in inviting him. He emphasized that the episode was intended to bring fun to late-night television, rather than to attack or politicize the discussion.
Neither The Tonight Show nor NBC immediately responded to requests for comment, leaving fans and media analysts to speculate about the strategy and impact of the controversial guest.
Drama and Conversation in Late Night

The episode exemplifies the balancing act of modern late-night television: attracting viewers while navigating potential backlash. Fallon’s willingness to host a divisive figure like Gutfeld generated heated debates online, boosted ratings, and created viral content, demonstrating that controversy can be a powerful ratings tool.
As the conversation continues, the episode has become a talking point not only for fans of late-night comedy but also for those interested in media, politics, and the influence of guest selection on audience behavior.
