Carol Kirkwood has spoken candidly about her divorce heartbreak and confessed that it’s “sad” when “relationships break down”. The BBC Breakfast weather presenter, who trained with the Met Office, discussed relationships in a recent interview where she reflected on her previous marriage.

Carol, who wed police officer Steve Randall in 2021, was formerly married to property developer Jimmy Kirkwood. The pair divorced in 2008 following 18 years together.

She previously revealed that during this difficult period, she maintained her cheerful on-screen demeanour whilst presenting on television, though she needed to have a good cry away from the cameras.

Carol has now suggested there “isn’t such a thing as a ‘perfect romance’” and offered insight into her former relationship, acknowledging it’s “sad” when things end.

Speaking to Woman’s Way, she said: “I love hearing about how people meet. I feel sad when relationships break down. I was married before, and we got divorced, and it’s always sad when that happens.

“But of course, there isn’t such a thing – I don’t think – as a perfect romance, where you’re never going to fall out or have cross words. Of course you are, that’s life.”

Carol, who is also a published author, has featured on the hugely popular Strictly Come Dancing and The One Show. Carol previously explained how her career helped her cope during the divorce, enabling her to put her ‘grief into a compartment’.

During a chat with Yours magazine, Carol revealed that she maintained this “separate” from her professional life; otherwise, she would have probably found herself in a “puddle of tears”.

Nevertheless, Carol has also heaped praise on her other half, Steve, whom she characterised as “very romantic and very generous,” she told PA. She even branded him a “lovely man.”

Meanwhile, Carol has also recently stunned her BBC Breakfast co-stars when she disclosed details about her past employment. At the time, she had been questioned about her summer holiday jobs during her younger years.

She revealed: “Yes, I did. I worked as a housemaid, as a waitress, as a receptionist, all these things!” Jon responded with: “You did everything!”

However, that wasn’t the end of it. Carol, who also appeared in The A to Z of TV Gardening, went on to confess that she’d undertaken another role that was miles apart from her glamorous position as a television weather presenter.

She disclosed: “Plus, a post woman as well! In Edinburgh.” She then outlined how the position had an unexpected disadvantage; it would leave her feeling peckish in the mornings.

Carol described how she would “smell toast, bacon, sausages” whilst completing her deliveries.
