Australia’s business and political community have paid tribute to former Labor powerbroker Tim Picton, who died on Monday, three weeks after an alleged assault outside a Perth nightclub left him with catastrophic injuries.
The 36-year-old was surrounded by family when he died, having never regained consciousness after his skull was fractured and he suffered severe brain bleeding in an alleged one-punch attack outside the Voodoo Lounge in Northbridge early on December 27.
A plumber’s apprentice, Brodie Jake Dewar, 20, of the Perth suburb of Lesmurdie was charged last month with grievous bodily harm in relation to the alleged attack. He is expected to have his charge upgraded to manslaughter when he reappears in court next month.
In a statement, Picton’s family members, including his wife, Priya Brown, said they were devastated at losing a deeply devoted father and loving husband, son, grandson, brother and uncle.
“His kindness, generosity and humour brought joy to our lives,” the statement said.
“We will be forever proud of Tim’s many extraordinary achievements and capacity for love, while knowing that he still had so much to give.
“Above all, Tim was an adoring father to four-year-old Charlotte, the love of his life. It breaks our hearts to know that Charlotte will grow up without her father by her side, but she will always know how deeply he loved her.
“Tim – we love you, we miss you, and we will always carry your memory with us.”
The family expressed its gratitude to first responders from St John Ambulance and WA Police, and to the staff in the Royal Perth Hospital intensive care unit. They asked for privacy as they grappled with an “immeasurable loss”.
Billionaire Chris Ellison sent his condolences to the family on behalf of the team at diversified iron ore miner Mineral Resources, where Picton was appointed director of strategy after leaving politics in 2022.
Ellison said Picton, who became one of his most trusted advisers amid a year of crises at the company, was an exceptional leader whose enthusiasm, drive and brilliant mind would leave a lasting legacy.
“He inspired those around him and his loss will be devastating for colleagues across our business,” said Ellison.
“Tim was a trusted colleague and a friend whose insight and advice I valued greatly. His loss is deeply felt, and I will miss him enormously.”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his sadness at Picton’s death, saying his devotion to the Labor party was underpinned by a desire to change the country for the better.
“Tim should have had many more decades ahead of him. That he has been taken from the world so young is such a cruel tragedy,” Albanese said.
West Australian Premier Roger Cook said Picton’s loss would be felt deeply across the state and the rest of the country.
“Not only was he deeply respected within Labor, he was a good mate to many in the party. We will miss his friendship, warmth, and thoughtfulness deeply,” said Cook.
A WA Labor statement said the entire party was in mourning, and hailed Picton as one of the finest campaigners the state had seen.
It said Picton, who masterminded ex-premier Mark McGowan’s 2021 election landslide, was a source of guidance and advice as well as a friend to many.
“A life like his, cut so tragically short, deserves to live on in our memories and in our actions,” it said.
McGowan said Picton’s death was a major loss to WA and Australia.
“Tim was an amazingly talented, bright and humorous person,” he said.
“His intellect, capacity and work ethic were enormous. He had a remarkable ability to grasp complex problems and provide solutions.
“The grief being felt by his family at this time will be immense and boundless. Please know that he was loved and respected by a great many people.”
Fortescue chief executive Dino Otranto praised Picton as a thoughtful and committed leader who brought integrity, clarity and genuine care to his role on the Chamber of Minerals and Energy’s board, and to the broader resources industry.
The former political staffer worked for the Victorian Labor Party for six years, rising to become a senior adviser to premier Daniel Andrews.
He worked in South Australia for senator Don Farrell, and as a strategist for the government of Jay Weatherill, before shifting west.
His brother is Chris Picton, SA’s health minister in the Malinauskas government.
His wife, Brown, is also a former strategist for Labor governments, having served as chief of staff and special adviser in WA, and is now a partner at Perth-based corporate advisory firm GRA Partners.
Alleged attacker Dewar had his bail revoked on January 16 when he appeared in court over a second alleged assault of a different man on Christmas Day.
“What I saw was two coward punches. It’s pretty low,” magistrate Mark Millington told the court.
In Dewar’s first court appearance, his lawyer said Picton had made unwanted advances towards Dewar’s female cousin and had ignored repeated requests to stop.
The court was shown CCTV footage of Picton talking to a man police allege was Dewar, who then punched the mining executive to the ground, where he remained unconscious.
Picton is understood to have hit his head on the curb. WA Police said paramedics treated Picton on the roadside, and bystanders also came to the mining executive’s assistance.
Part of Picton’s skull was removed during emergency surgery at Royal Perth Hospital, and he was placed in a medically induced coma from which he did not emerge.
