A young boy who was rescued from a shark attack in the Bahamas by his brother has been identified.

On Tuesday, June 23, Parker Roll was bitten by an 8- to 10-foot shark 60 miles away from the shore, while swimming with his older brother, Jack. According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the incident occurred during a tour in Staniel Cay, Exuma.

Parker, 12, swam with his brother up to a canal lined with mangroves, where he noticed what he first thought was a rock. “I called out to him. I said, ‘Look at this rock. It looks like a humongous shark,’ ” he told Click2Houston.

“It gets two or three feet away from me, I was like, ‘Oh, it’s just a nurse shark,’ ” said Jack. “[Seconds later], I just hear this ear-piercing scream, and the clearest blue water turned to the murkiest red.”

“I looked down and I could see my bone,” Parker recalled. “It just felt like a knife stabbing over and over, then twisting.”

Jack took off his brother’s swimsuit and tied it tightly around his leg, where he had been bitten, to try to stop the bleeding as he warned others that there was a shark in the water, per Click2Houston.

“We were 60 miles offshore, our phones don’t work, and we’re on an island with nobody around us,” Jack recalled. “It’s either we help him or nobody can really help him.”

A boat crew eventually came to the rescue, carrying Parker around the shoreline to safety, according to Click2Houston.

The group didn’t regain cell service until 45 minutes later and was able to contact emergency responders.

Parker was transported to the hospital, where he received 1,000 stitches on his leg. He is expected to make a full recovery, but is currently unable to walk, per Click2Houston.

“I didn’t lose my leg, but there was a high possibility if I kept bleeding and it wasn’t stopped,” said Parker. “I’m also glad I didn’t just bleed out there. Especially when you’re that far offshore.”
