Lewis Hamilton has struggled in his first season at Ferrari

Lewis Hamilton had hoped that his high-profile move from Mercedes to Ferrari would provide a fresh start and rejuvenate his career after struggling to adapt to the ground-effect cars. Instead, the 2025 season has turned out to be one of the most challenging campaigns in his illustrious Formula 1 career.
The seven-time world champion has endured a dismal year at Ferrari, with performance woes making it highly likely that he will record his lowest points total since the 2010 points system was introduced. Heading into the season finale at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, Lewis Hamilton faces the very real prospect of ending a calendar year without a single podium finish for the first time in his F1 career. His difficulties stem from a combination of factors, including his inability to fully adapt his driving style to the Ferrari SF-25 and a lack of synergy with the team’s operational approach.
Ferrari have compounded Lewis Hamilton’s struggles with questionable strategic calls and upgrades to the SF-25 that have repeatedly failed to deliver. Former F1 driver Jean Alesi publicly criticized Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur for using the 2026 regulation changes and the focus on the upcoming car as an excuse for Hamilton’s disappointing 2025 performance.
However, critics are not sparing Lewis Hamilton from scrutiny. Former driver Christian Danner suggested that the Briton has struggled to meet the high standards expected of him due to his inability to adapt effectively to Ferrari’s car. Clearly lacking confidence, Lewis Hamilton has been leaning on guidance from familiar faces within the paddock.
Toto Wolff provides private support to Lewis Hamilton during turbulent Ferrari season

Mercedes chief communications officer Bradley Lord recently spoke to CHAMP1 about Lewis Hamilton’s first year at Ferrari. He confirmed that the British driver’s former team feel a personal empathy for the 40-year-old Briton and are offering support in their own way. Bradley Lord revealed that Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has been actively traveling with Lewis Hamilton to races and providing private encouragement throughout the grueling season.
According to Lord, Wolff has been a consistent source of advice and motivation for Lewis Hamilton, acknowledging the immense dedication the driver invests in his career. Lord explained that every driver experiences peaks and troughs, and while Lewis Hamilton has been deeply affected by his struggles, Toto Wolff’s guidance aims to reinforce his resilience and belief in his capabilities.
Lord detailed how Wolff talks to Lewis Hamilton during race weekends, emphasizing the champion’s ability to still serve as a benchmark in Formula 1. “We understand how much heart and soul Lewis puts into his work, how committed he is to training and preparation, and sometimes drivers just hit a phase where everything doesn’t come together,” Lord said. “Toto often travels with him, they discuss the challenges, and we try to provide encouragement. We still believe that Lewis Hamilton can excel and continue to set the benchmark in this sport.”
Mercedes cautiously optimistic about Lewis Hamilton’s 2026 prospects

Looking ahead, Bradley Lord expressed cautious optimism that Lewis Hamilton could rediscover his former form under the new 2026 F1 regulations. The end of the current ground-effect era may provide the perfect opportunity for Lewis Hamilton to recalibrate and perform at his usual high standard. “On a human level, yes, we feel for him because of how much effort he puts in,” Lord explained. “But I also believe he will emerge from this period stronger. That makes me cautiously optimistic that he can bounce back even more competitive next year.”
Ferrari are preparing for 2026 with determination, aiming to provide Lewis Hamilton with a car that suits his driving style and maximizes his experience. Early signs are promising, as Maranello has reportedly completed a crash test with their 2026 car ahead of schedule, signaling that the team is striving to gain an early advantage over their rivals. The combination of the new regulations and a competitive car could finally allow Lewis Hamilton to find his footing at Ferrari and return to the front of the grid.
With Toto Wolff’s private encouragement and Ferrari’s proactive preparations for 2026, the Briton may have the tools and support necessary to revive his championship ambitions. The upcoming season could prove pivotal for the seven-time world champion, potentially restoring him to his former dominance and confidence in Formula 1.
