Carrie Underwood expresses deep sorrow over the loss of her friend and co-writer Brett James, whose artistry has forever influenced her music.

According to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, on Thursday it was announced that the renowned songwriter Brett James had died in a plane crash. He was 57.

Underwood and James collaborated on the 2005 hit “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” as well as on her 2009 song “Cowboy Casanova.”

Some things are simply indescribable. The loss of Brett James for his family, friends, and our music community is so great that it cannot be put into words.

Brett was one of the most sought-after collaborators in the industry; his knack for working with stars such as Taylor Swift, Bon Jovi, and Keith Urban yielded numerous hits. He was also the co-writer of Kenny Chesney’s song “Out Last Night.”

Brett was the embodiment of true “coolness”. In my mind he would roll up to my little cabins on a motorcycle to write songs; even under the helmet his hair looked impeccably styled. I always loved hearing him sing “Cowboy Casanova,” because the anthem of a bold girl-power tune would sound odd coming from such a manly man, but he truly pulled it off, – she continued.

Brett’s loss leaves a void in all of us that I fear will never disappear. It will forever remind us that life is but a moment… we must cherish every day we are given on this earth. Every day is a gift,

Love you, friend. See you again someday.
