A Perth family is demanding answers after a 25-year-old man with severe autism was allegedly assaulted in his NDIS accommodation and left for hours without medical care.
Corey Wooller, who also lives with multiple disabilities, was discovered by his mother, Kim McBearty, during a spontaneous visit to the home on December 14.
“No one deserves to be assaulted, especially a vulnerable person like that,” Ms McBearty said.
“I used to think he was safe there, but obviously he wasn’t.”
She found her son slumped on a couch with visible injuries, claiming no first aid had been administered and no ambulance had been called by the staff on duty.
“The big thing is if my mum never came over that day, would Corey have even gone to the hospital? Would he have even gotten help?,” Corey’s sister, Nicole, said.
After his mother insisted on professional medical help, the man spent three days in emergency and a further four weeks in hospital recovering from the ordeal.
It is understood the support worker present at the time of the discovery refused to answer the family’s questions regarding how the injuries occurred.

Despite the severity of the incident and an apparent failure in the provider’s duty of care, the family said police have dismissed their concerns, directing them instead to lodge a formal complaint with the NDIS.
While a complaint has been filed, the NDIS has reportedly provided no further information to the family in the three months since the assault.
“You don’t want to put your children in these places and you put your trust and care in these people and they’re getting good money for doing it and they’re just not doing it. I mean, that’s definitely neglect,” Ms McBearty said.
The family said Corey’s physical scars have healed – but he’s changed. He won’t even let his mum give him a hug anymore.
“I think, you know, is he blaming me for what happened to him? The guilt’s quite bad. Because I think, you know, it wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t put him there,” Ms McBearty said.
The family is now calling for urgent action and transparency, fearful that the support worker involved remains employed within the disability system.
Police have now re-opened the investigation, but said they will only be looking at the assault as the allegation of neglect that followed, is not a criminal matter.

7News contacted the NDIS accommodation provider — My Way — who is being investigated by NDIS. The chief executive officer, Peter Mapior, said “Corey’s quality of life improved under My Way care”.
“There was no incident on record of other participant attacking Corey in the house, and they have stayed together for 2 years,” he said.
“The ambulance was called by My Way support worker, same support worker reported Corey’s nose bleeding to our after-hours care coordinator, who instructed him to call ambulance immediately. It was the same time Corey’s mum arrive at the house.
“Corey had chronic blood disorder which cause his skin to bruise.
“The support worker on duty was immediately investigated, incident reported and HR is still investigating the matter.”
But Corey’s mum, still feels as though her family has been left in the dark.
“They just won’t tell us what’s happening,” Ms McBearty said.
“They just, you know, that’s what’s really frustrating. They just think we’re stupid and you know, we’re just going to let it go. But I’m not because Corey can’t fight.”
