Fans have been sent into a frenzy after watching the new trailer for an upcoming horror remake of The Mummy that promises to be an audacious and twisted retelling of the classic.

The new film is already being labelled as ‘twisted’. It is also set to boast a Netflix star among its stellar cast.

Filmmaker Lee Cronin is helming the production this time around, serving as the film’s writer and director. He had previously made Evil Dead Rise which starred Stranger Things’ Nell Fisher as well as 2019’s The Hole in the Ground.

According to the synopsis the young daughter of a journalist disappears into the desert without a trace. Eight years later, the broken family is shocked when she is returned to them, as what should be a joyful reunion turns into a living nightmare.

It’s not the first time the iconic franchise has been reimagined. The series originally started 1932 and inspired a handful of sequels. In 1959, Hammer Films made their own series with the iconic Christopher Lee taking on the role of The Mummy.

The series is probably remembered more for the Stephen Sommers series that began in 1999, which saw Brendan Fraser in the heroic lead role. It sparked two sequels and a spin-off in The Scorpion King starring Dwayne Johnson.

Tom Cruise teamed up with Russell Crowe at a more recent attempt at remaking the franchise. Released in 2017, The Mummy was supposed to inspire a Dark Universe franchise using monsters from Universal Pictures catalogue similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This latest attempt with Cronin teaming up with Blumhouse productions who also brought audiences titles like Weapons promises ‘a terrifying new version’. This should please horror purists with the focus on frights rather than action set pieces.

Fans have also been given their first look at the film via a new trailer. The footage shows a disturbing series of images including mysterious figures hiding in the shadows and a body in a coffin coming back to life.

The film stars Jack Reynor in a currently unnamed role. Irish actor Reynor has previously appeared in Netflix limited series The Perfect Couple, along with The Peripheral and Midsommar. He is joined in the cast by Laia Costa, May Calamawy, Natalie Grace, and Veronica Falcón.

Many fans have reacted to the trailer sharing their excitement for the film’s release. One person posted: “Finally! I always believed instead of remaking the epic adventure movie again, they should take it back to it’s roots as a supernatural horror movie like the original 1932 version.”

Another commented: “This is the Mummy movie I’ve been waiting for. The teaser looks amazing. Mummy movies should be horror movies, not action movies.” While a third added: “Looks amazing!!! Can’t wait, Lee Cronin is a modern horror master!”
