The Yorkshire shepherdess often reveals the harsh conditions and realities of farming and took to Instagram to document her latest gruelling night shift

manda Owen is known for putting up with some of the UK’s most trying conditions as a shepherdess on her Yorkshire farm in Swaledale.

Despite it now being April, the Our Yorkshire Farm star, 51, revealed just how frosty the spring temperatures remain on the farm, and has been praised by fans for sharing how she perseveres through the tough conditions.

A gruelling night shift

Taking to Instagram, Amanda shared a series of videos and pictures from a “sleety, snowy, cold” night shift while gathering turnips for her sheep.

“What a terribly disgusting night,” she began. “It is so cold! I just thought the sheep would appreciate some turnips, so I’ve come down for a load of turnips and, seriously, it’s actually snowing.

“It’s so cold and awful. I’m just glad that we’ve got the lambs inside, and the lambs that we have put outside have macs on, like little jackets, because they’ll need it tonight.”

Panning the camera around, Amanda showed sleet falling on the turnips she was gathering for the sheep, adding: “What a horrible night.”

In the final slide, Amanda was filmed guiding a sheep and two lambs through a barn. Donning waterproof dungarees, she worked while Everyday I Love You Less and Less by the Kaiser Chiefs played from a speaker in the background.

Amanda’s followers were quick to take to the comments to share their praise for the shepherdess.

“Oh, Amanda! Really feel for you. I’m currently enjoying all four of your fascinating books. Hope you’re inside soon, warming up in front of the fire,” said one person, while another wrote: “You’re a super woman. Poor animals as well as you, with the sudden change in temperature.”

One special thank you

Another fan took to the comments to thank Amanda for a previous post, in which she’d shown how her two youngest daughters had calmly and safely delivered two lambs.

“I just wanted to say thank you,” read the comment.

“I had to step in and keep an eye on one of my sister’s ewes today. She was delivering twins and I was on my own. I’m not used to sheep, really, but I had only recently watched your two girls deliver a lamb under your tuition, so I was quite calm as I knew what to do. So thank you, Amanda. Twins safely delivered.”
