Terrifying footage shows a man armed with two huge blades in the street as police arrived at the scene.
Locals say a number of people may have been stabbed, with an emergency response in place since before 9am.
William Ramsay, who lives in the area, said he believed the man with the weapons had entered the stairwell of his building.
He told Press Association: “He smashed the local shop, possibly stabbed two people unconfirmed.

“Armed police, dogs been here for about two hours.”
Two people were injured and taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment.
The suspect was spotted grinning at a window in the area during the ongoing stand-off with police.
He was spotted roaming around the back of local cafe, Brunch, between 8am and 8.30am.
Staff were left shaken and had to temporarily close as they feared for their safety.
A worker, who wishes to remain anonymous, told The Scottish Sun: “He was outside the back of our building.
“We went outside and the guy was running around with two knives at the grass patch out the back. He was walking towards us and then he started going towards the high flats.
“I’ve never seen him before. It was scary.

“The two blades were red. He’s clearly caught somebody bad with them. We shut the cafe earlier but we’re open now.
“The police have got it under control now but at the time it was lawless. It’s not been a normal Monday around here.”
Residents raised concerns over the incident on social media, with some saying schools in the area have been locked down.
Parents of pupils at Wester Hailes High School were sent a text informing them of the incident.
It read: “The school is in lockdown following an incident in the community this morning.
“The children are safe. We will update you in 30 minutes. Thank you.”
The suspect is now believed to be holed up in a tower block flat in a stand-off with police.
A local who asked not to be named said: “We just got up this morning to go to the shop and the whole place was going crazy.
“Apparently people have been stabbed.
“The guy is inside a flat on the ninth floor and he keeps looking out the window. It’s horrifying.
“Pictures of a guy with two knives have been shared on social media.
“It’s shocking and the whole area is on lockdown with cops everywhere.”
Officers confirmed that the disturbance is now contained and there is not believed to be any wider risk to the public.
The incident is not being treated as terror related.
