Greg Gutfeld had an angry outburst at his co-host Jessica Tarlov when she brought up the late Minnesota Representative Melissa Hortman.
The two co-hosts were arguing over the rise of political violence in the United States on Fox News’ The Five on Monday, September 15. The Five is a roundtable political program that features full-time hosts Gutfeld, Dana Perino, and Jesse Watters, and rotating hosts Harold Ford Jr. and Tarlov.
Tarlov and Ford Jr. are the more liberal voices in the show compared to the other conservative hosts. Gutfeld went on to claim that the political violence is coming from the left through a conversation about Charlie Kirk’s suspected murderer Tyler Robinson. He said, “What is interesting here is, why is only this happening on the left and not the right? That’s all we need to know.””What about Melissa Hortman?” Tarlov inquired.
Tarlov asking that led to Gutfeld snapping and going on an angry rant. He replied, “You wanna talk about Melissa Hortman? Did you know her name before it happened? None of us did.”

“None of us were spending every single day talking about Mrs. Hortman. I never heard of her until after she died,” he added.
“So, it doesn’t matter?” Tarlov asked, sounding appalled.
“Don’t play that bulls‑‑‑ with me,” Gutfeld yelled. “You know what I’m talking…What I’m saying is there was no demonization, amplification about that woman before she died. It was a specific crime against her by somebody who knew her.”
Hortman was a Democratic speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives. She and her husband, Mark, were gunned down in their home on June 14 by an assassin disguised as a police officer. The killer also murdered the couple’s golden retriever, Gilbert. The same killer also targeted Minnesota Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. The two were shot but survived.
Vance Boelter was accused of killing the Hortmans and their dog, as well as the attempted murder of the Hoffmans. Boelter was indicted on six federal charges in connection with their murders and the stalking of the Hortmans, the stalking and shooting of the Hoffmans, and the attempted shooting of Melissa and Mark Hortman’s daughter, Hope.

Boelter’s motives in killing and shooting the Democratic politicians and their spouses are unclear. Friends have reportedly described him as an evangelical Christian with politically conservative views who struggled with finding work. In an interview with the New York Post, Boelter claimed the shootings had nothing to do with him being anti-abortion and his support for President Donald Trump, but did not explain why he allegedly killed the Hortmans and injured the Hoffmans.
“You are fishing and I can’t talk about my case … I’ll say it didn’t involve either the Trump stuff or pro-life,” Boelter wrote in a message to the newspaper through the jail’s messaging system.
People took to X, formerly Twitter, to blast Gutfeld for belittling Hortman’s death. One person said, “Gutfeld is so wrong on this point. He’s a f—ing hypocrite . Melissa Hortman was well known in her state, known well enough for someone to dress up as a policeman to gain entry to her home and kill her & her husband.”
A second person said, “Greg Gutfeld playing mental gymnastics to explain how it’s only the left that is violent. We never heard of Hortman, therefore the Trump supporter who murder her isn’t a reflection of right wing violence. LOL.”
Another said,”Gutfeld needs to be taken off the air for saying he never heard of Hortman before the murder as a suggestion it was less of a murder. Pure evil to make it your argument. Like the new standard for a murder mattering is if you heard of the person before. Terrible people.”
The fourth person said, “Truly next level elitism that Gutfeld seems outraged at the idea of a non-celebrity’s assassination being brought up in the same breath as the killing of a famous person. It is all political violence. Hortman’s murderer had a list of other Democrats to kill.”
