The 22-year-old died after her backpack became hooked on a ski lift.
According to Japanese outlet Yomiuri Shimbun, Brooke was pulled along by the lift for 18 yards before staff pressed the emergency stop button.
Investigators believe she was unable to get off the chairlift after an unfastened buckle on her backpack became caught on the carriage.
As the lift continued moving, she was left dangling above the ground.
By the time the lift ground to a halt, Brooke was hanging 26 feet in the air.
It took rescuers 15 minutes to bring her down.
She reportedly suffered cardiac arrest during the ordeal and was rushed to hospital.
Despite doctors’ efforts, she was pronounced dead on January 30.
In a statement to 7NEWS Australia, Tsugaike Gondola Lift Co. said the accident occurred after a “buckle at the end of an unfastened waist belt attached to a backpack carried by a customer became in the lift carriage”.
“Since the chest strap was fastened, the backpack remained attached to the body,” the statement continued.
“Subsequently, staff pressed the stop button to halt the lift. Prompt rescue efforts were carried out, and the customer was transported by ambulance.”
Brooke had been working at a physiotherapy clinic at the resort as a receptionist.
In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was “providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian who died in Japan”.
The tragedy follows a string of terrifying chairlift incidents around the world.
In December, a tourist was killed in Montenegro when a ski lift suddenly slid backwards and slammed into the chair behind.
The violent collision trapped the victim’s wife and sent the man plunging from the lift.
His wife was left stranded for hours in the damaged chair, forced to endure the aftermath of the horror incident she had just witnessed.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
In January 2025, two young women were left in intensive care and at least 30 others were seriously injured when a ski lift pulley snapped at a Resort in Spain
The mechanical failure left around 80 skiers and snowboarders dangling helplessly from their chairs as emergency crews rushed to the mountain to reach those trapped in the terrifying ordeal.
