A 3-month-old baby has died and at least five others have been injured in a highway crash in California.
The crash occurred in the northbound lanes of the 215 Freeway near Eucalyptus Avenue in Riverside at around 7:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, March 29, ABC7 Los Angeles and KTLA reported, citing the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
A 2015 Nissan Versa slammed into the back of a 2013 Honda Civic, which had slowed due to heavy traffic. A 2015 Toyota Rav4 then hit the back of the Nissan, according to the outlets. The CHP is reportedly investigating the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
Two adults and two children, a toddler and a 3-month-old, were inside the Nissan. The two children were both in child car seats in the back of the vehicle, which was severely damaged in the crash, per ABC7 Los Angeles and KTLA.
The Riverside Fire Department responded to the scene and removed the family from the vehicle after they became trapped inside. The 3-month-old baby died at the scene, KTLA reported, citing the Riverside County Coroner’s Office (RCCO).
Video of the incident shows a firefighter holding the toddler after being rescued from the destroyed Nissan, as other fire department members worked to save others injured at the scene.
The CHP reported that both adults in the Nissan suffered minor to major injuries, per KTLA. The driver of the Toyota suffered moderate injuries and those riding in the Honda had minor injuries. At least five of those injured were hospitalized, according to the outlet, citing the CHP.
The family and other drivers have not been identified at this time.

Witnesses at the scene tried to rescue the family in the Nissan, but they couldn’t open the car doors, per ABC7 Los Angeles.
“We all tried to pry the doors open,” bystander Cianca C. told the outlet. “They were pulling sporadically, and I decided to say, ‘One, two, three,’ and we would pull … Obviously, we are just human. We are not machines, so we could not get it open.”
“We urgently tried to get to the children in the back, but we were not successful. I tried keeping the parents calm and telling them that I was there, trying to get any information that I could,” she recalled.
Investigators do not suspect drugs or alcohol as factors in the crash, according to reports.
The CHP is asking anyone who may have seen the incident to call the CHP Accident Investigation Unit at (951) 324-7210.
PEOPLE has reached out to the CHP, Riverside Fire Department and RCCO for further comment.
