A JUROR chosen to decide the fate of a mother who killed her three young children returned to court and admitted he could not cope with the harrowing case.
The emotional young man told the judge, “I just don’t know if I can handle being on the jury,” before being excused from Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial.

The dramatic moment unfolded Tuesday at Plymouth Superior Court in Massachusetts as lawyers worked to select an impartial panel.
The man had been the second juror picked on Monday but came back after the lunch break the following day asking to withdraw, the Boston Globe reported.
He appeared visibly upset as he raised his right hand and was sworn in during a private conference with the judge and lawyers.
Judge William F. Sullivan granted his request and released him from the case.

Despite the setback, jury selection rapidly gathered pace on Wednesday.
Seventeen of the required 18 jurors had been seated by 12:35 pm, leaving just one place to fill.
The final group will include 12 deliberating jurors and six alternates for a trial expected to run for up to eight weeks.
Clancy, 36, is charged with three counts of first-degree murder over the January 2023 deaths of her children.
The former Massachusetts General Hospital labor and delivery nurse has pleaded not guilty.
Her defense does not dispute that she strangled five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and eight-month-old Callan with exercise bands.

However, attorney Kevin Reddington will argue that Clancy was not criminally responsible because she was suffering from severe postpartum mental illness.
Prosecutors claim the killings were deliberate and carefully planned.
The children died on January 24, 2023, inside the family’s home in Duxbury, about 35 miles southeast of Boston.
Clancy had asked her then-husband, Patrick, to collect takeout and stop at a pharmacy before attacking the children, prosecutors allege.
She then cut her neck and wrists before jumping from a second-story window in an unsuccessful attempt to take her own life.
The fall left her paralyzed, and she is being held at Tewksbury Hospital while awaiting the outcome of the case.
Clancy has been brought into court in a wheelchair accompanied by two nurses and a female court officer.
Her parents have sat nearby in the public gallery during jury selection.

She has watched the process closely from the witness box, sitting only feet away as prospective jurors are privately questioned.
Dozens of candidates have been dismissed after being asked whether they can remain impartial and cope with the grim evidence.
They have also faced sensitive questions about their own mental health and their experiences with relatives suffering from psychiatric illnesses.
Another prospective juror was seen wiping away tears as she left the courtroom.
Eighty-nine candidates reported for jury duty Monday, followed by another pool of 92 on Tuesday.
Reddington has portrayed Clancy as a loving mother who repeatedly sought help as her mental health deteriorated after Callan’s birth.
He claims she was prescribed 13 medications and developed both suicidal and homicidal thoughts.
Clancy has said she heard a voice ordering her to kill her children and herself.
Prosecutors have pointed to evidence they argue shows that she understood her actions and prepared for the killings.
They previously alleged that she searched online for the phrase “can you treat a sociopath” four days before the children died.
The state also claims she researched ways to kill and deliberately sent Patrick to a restaurant far enough away to give her time to carry out the attacks.
Jurors will be played Patrick’s anguished 911 call after he returned home and found his wife badly injured outside.
He then discovered the children unresponsive in the basement.
Patrick, who has since divorced Clancy and remarried, appears on witness lists submitted by both sides.
He previously urged the public to forgive his former wife, saying, “I wasn’t married to a monster — I was married to someone who got sick.”
Reddington is also fighting to restrict the number of first responders who can testify about the horrific crime scene.
The defense has asked Sullivan to let prosecutors call only one of the 18 emergency workers listed as possible witnesses.
Reddington argues that repeated accounts of the scene would duplicate evidence and unfairly inflame the jury.
The motion has not yet been argued before the judge.
Prosecutors have listed 168 possible witnesses, while the defense has named 53.

Under Massachusetts law, prosecutors must prove that Clancy was not suffering from a mental illness that deprived her of criminal responsibility.
They could alternatively show that despite being mentally ill, she understood the killings were wrong and was capable of obeying the law.
