Authorities in Illinois have arrested two teenagers and charged one of them with murder and dismembering a body after five family members were found massacred over the weekend.
The shooting spree unfolded across multiple locations in East St. Louis, Ill., the Illinois State Police said in a statement on Sunday, July 12.
The deceased have been identified by police as 74-year-old Patricia A. May, 49-year-old Cherie L. May, 25-year-old Shania W. Thompson, 24-year-old Devin D. May and 21-year-old Quentin L. Thompson.
Police have since arrested a 15-year-old girl and 16-year-old Ja’ymier Davis in connection with the killings, they said in an updated statement on Tuesday, July 14.
The investigation began on Sunday after human remains were found at a residence in East St. Louis, the ISP said in a statement. The remains were confirmed to be those of Cherie.
The discovery led investigators to the other four bodies across multiple locations in East St. Louis, police said. All of the victims are related to the 15-year-old girl.
Family members alleged to KARE 11 that the girl was Patricia’s granddaughter. A fundraiser for the Mays claimed both suspects are family members.
Relatives say Patricia was the matriarch, Cherie was her daughter and Devin was her grandson. Quentin and Shania were siblings, according to relatives, but it wasn’t immediately clear how they were related to the Mays.

Now, the families are left grieving while trying to manage multiple funerals.
Two separate GoFundMe campaigns have been set up for the May family and the Thompson siblings.
The fundraiser for Miranda May, Cherie’s daughter, claims Devin was a new father, whose 1-year-old daughter now urgently needs support.
“Miranda is left feeling broken and alone, not knowing where to turn and feeling so lost as she tries to navigate the overwhelming grief and the challenges that come with such a sudden and profound loss,” reads part of the Mays’ fundraiser.
The two injured victims were identified in the Thompson siblings’ fundraiser as their mother, Tiffany, and a cousin. They were both taken to the hospital in serious condition.
Police have not released information about a possible motive but said there is no greater threat to the community.
The teens were apprehended after police flagged a vehicle being driven by one of them, ISP said in its initial statement.
Ja’ymier has been charged as an adult with five counts of first-degree murder; one count of dismembering a human body; two counts of first-degree attempted murder; two counts of aggravated battery; one count of aggravated vehicular hijacking; and one count of unlawful use of a firearm, ISP said in an updated statement on Tuesday.
The St. Clair County State’s Attorney is seeking to charge the 15-year-old with first-degree murder in adult criminal court, per the statement.
It wasn’t immediately clear if Ja’ymier has retained an attorney or entered pleas.
