The young man who stabbed a teenage girl 11 times in her driveway as she returned home from a night out was a recent graduate of an elite Melbourne school.

It is understood the 18-year-old hid in nearby bushes of the girl’s $3 million home in Kew, the city’s inner-east, when she was attacked about 1am on Wednesday.

Her loud screams woke up her family and neighbours.

Police said the 18-year-old man was found dead in Antwerp, in western Victoria, at 6.15am.

The offender had only graduated from Trinity Grammar, an independent Anglican school for boys, last year, according to The Age.

Tuition fees at the school for 2026 range from $30,000 for children in prep, also known as kindergarten, right up to almost $45,000 for Year 12 students.

Staff and the school community were shocked to hear of the stabbing.

“The TGS community is profoundly saddened by this terrible incident,” a statement read.

“Our thoughts are with the young woman as she recovers, and the families involved. Out of respect for the ongoing police investigation and the privacy of those involved, we are unable to comment further at this time.”

The 18-year-old girl had also recently graduated from a school also in Kew. The dead man and the teenager knew each other.

In a statement, Victoria Police said: “Boroondara Crime Investigation Unit detectives were actively searching for the 18-year-old Camberwell man after a woman was stabbed outside a Miller Grove home about 1am this morning.”

“Detectives, who are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding what occurred, are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.

“The death of the man is not being treated as suspicious, and police will prepare a report for the Coroner.”

The offender was known to police.

It is thought Dr Michael’s daughter was stabbed with a kitchen knife at least 11 times as her attacker lay in wait for her in the bushes near the multimillion-dollar home.

The suspected weapon was found by police in the garden.

One neighbour described the victim’s family as “very lovely”.

Blood was found spattered on the driveway and over the family’s blue Porsche.

Forensic officers spent the day searching for clues and dusted the sports car for fingerprints, which was also seen with blood stains.

Neighbours later on Thursday also left a hamper and food. A car also stopped outside the home, with a man and woman seen leaving bags of shopping.

Superintendent Wayne Cheesman told Nova radio on Wednesday that the teenager was “minding her own business” before the attack.

“She gets dropped off at her residence in Kew and there’s a male who is known to her – he’s also of similar age – and he approaches her in her driveway as she’s about to enter the family home and he stabs her multiple times,” he said.

“Just a young girl who was minding her own business walking home in the safety of her own driveway.

“How an 18-year-old boy can, for whatever reason, think that it’s okay to approach a girl he knows and stab her multiple times in her own home is really sad and I don’t know how people get to that point.”

Dr Michael has a private practice in Clyde Road in Berwick and operates at the Epworth Hospital in Richmond and Hawthorn, and Cabrini Hospital, Malvern.

State’s knife crime issue

Victoria has been grappling with knife crime for several years.

The state government introduced a machete ban last September, after the sale of large knives were prohibited in May, amid a spike in injuries and deaths related to the weapons.

Controversial amnesty bins, a program which cost taxpayers $13 million, were distributed to police stations across Victoria to encourage residents to hand in machetes.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan in December said 25,000 weapons had been handed in over the two month period.

“It’s about drying up supply, because we have seen too much of this dangerous, deadly behaviour, and getting these weapons off our streets is the focus,” she said.

Police also have expanded search powers in parts of Melbourne, including the CBD, Southbank and South Melbourne, if they suspect a person is carrying a weapon.

They are equipped with handheld metal detectors and can search anyone at random.

Knife crime has been a problem for at least the past decade.

Coroner Ingrid Giles pointed to the state’s homicide register which showed there had been 245 homicides involving knives in the state between Kanuary 2014 and September 2025.

Most involved adults, but 18 of the deadly incidents involved children.

Ms Giles was tasked to head a coronial investigation following the stabbing of 15-year-old Solomone Taufe’ulungaki in 2020.

The teen had stabbed in the chest after being chased by a group of up to 10 boys who mistakenly believed he was a member of a rival gang.
