BBC News | June 17, 2025

Authorities have confirmed that four people were killed when a light aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from London Southend Airport on Sunday afternoon.

🔹 Crash Details

The aircraft — identified as a Beechcraft B200 Super King Air — had landed earlier in the day and was departing for De Kooy Airport in the Netherlands when it encountered difficulties and crashed within the airport perimeter.

Emergency crews were dispatched immediately, but all four individuals on board died at the scene, Essex Police confirmed during a press briefing.

“Sadly, we can now confirm that all four people on board died,” said an Essex Police spokesperson. “At this stage, we believe all four were foreign nationals. We are working to formally confirm their identities.”

🔹 Investigation Underway

A multi-agency investigation is now underway involving:

Essex Police

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB)

The Royal Air Force

Essex Fire and Rescue Service

Civil Aviation Authority

London Southend Airport officials

To assist with the investigation, a restricted airspace zone has been established around the crash site. Detectives and forensic experts are gathering physical evidence and speaking with witnesses, some of whom have already submitted video footage of the crash.

“This is a highly sensitive and complex investigation,” said Lisa Fitz-Simons, principal inspector for the AAIB. “Our goal is to understand what went wrong and whether there are safety lessons to be learned.”

🔹 Ongoing Recovery and Analysis

The AAIB has deployed a team of eight inspectors specializing in aircraft engineering, human factors, flight operations, and data recovery. Once initial evidence is secured, the wreckage will be transported to Farnborough, Hampshire, for further analysis.

At this time, officials have not speculated on the cause of the crash. The focus remains on gathering physical evidence, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing flight data.

🔹 Airport Response and Closure

June Win Stanley, CEO of London Southend Airport, expressed her condolences and confirmed that the airport will remain closed until further notice.

“We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the families and friends of those lost,” she said. “We’re working closely with authorities and will support the investigation in any way we can.”

Passengers are urged to contact their airlines directly for updates on flight status.

🔹 Community Reaction

The crash, which occurred just past 4:10 PM local time, has deeply affected the local community and airport staff. Officials praised the professionalism of emergency responders and thanked the public for their patience and understanding during this difficult time.
