The BBC has been forced to apologise to the Princess of Wales after they used her incorrect title in their coverage on Remembrance Day. During a solemn appearance at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, the broadcaster consistently referred to the Princess by her maiden name, Kate Middleton, despite her not being styled this way since her 2011 wedding.
In response to numerous complaints, the BBC issued an apology to the Princess on November 14. A statement released by the company said: “During our coverage of memorials to commemorate Armistice Day we mistakenly referred to Catherine, Princess of Wales as Kate Middleton; these were errors during hours of live broadcasting for which we apologise.
‘Throughout our Armistice Day coverage more broadly, we referred to Catherine by her correct title.”
The error prompted fury among royal fans on social media, with many calling the move “disrespectful”.
Jim Shannon, MP for Strangford, “A reminder to @BBCNews to educate its broadcasters that the Princess of Wales has not been ‘Kate Middleton’ since 2011. Her correct title is Catherine, Princess of Wales. Get it right.”
Taking to X, one person wrote: “Who is the moron calling the Princess of Wales “Kate Middleton” on BBC News?”
Another said: “Am I missing something? Is the BBC now not just left-wing but also republican? “Kate Middleton” ?? ??? How bl**y disrespectful. This woman keeps calling her Kate Middleton. FFS!”
A third wrote, “Can somebody have a word in the ear of your reporter at the National Memorial Arboretum – she should not be referring to the Princess of Wales as ‘Kate Middleton’!!”

Catherine has been styled as the Princess of Wales since 2022, when King Charles proclaimed that she and Prince William would be known as the Prince and Princess of Wales.
At the time, William also became the Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles, and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland. As a result, the Princess also assumed the female versions of these titles.
Before this move, the couple had been known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge ever since they married on April 29, 2011, at Westminster Abbey.
