A dingo advocacy group says the Queensland Government was “not interested” in the facts before ordering the culling of a pack of dingoes found near the body of a Canadian tourist on a Queensland island.
Rangers euthanised nine dingoes in the wake of the death of backpacker Piper James, 19, on K’gari last week, with plans to cull at least one more.
James was found surrounded by a small pack of dingoes near the surf at the Maheno Wreck on the eastern side of the island about 6am on January 19.
While a cause of exact cause of her death may take months to be determined, preliminary autopsy results suggest she likely drowned.
However, dingoes were also found to have bitten the teen traveller before she died.
K’gari traditional owner Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation and local advocacy group Save K’gari Dingoes have both hit out at the government order to cull the dingoes involved.

“Authorities are still unsure how she died and further testing is being carried out but Premier David Crisafulli and Environment Minister Andrew Powell are not interested in waiting for the facts and have ordered that all dingoes on the beach that morning be destroyed,” Save K’gari Dingoes told 7NEWS.com.au.
“Instead of addressing the issues at hand the government has now taken the easy and appalling action of directing (Parks and Wildlife) to euthanise the dingoes and subsequently deny any culpability.
“This was a political decision made without consultation.”

Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation said it was not consulted about the cull and was considering legal action, 7NEWS reported.
“We’ve got a process in place, we didn’t even get consulted,” BAC director Christine Royan later told ABC.
“I’m calling on the premier to actually look at the mismanagement of K’gari by Queensland Parks and Wildlife.”

Royan said the group was considering legal action against the government under the conservation act.
The Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation said rangers had observed “aggressive behaviour” among the dingoes believed to have been involved with James around the time of her death.
“We are aware of the initial findings of Piper James’ autopsy. We extend our deepest sympathies to Piper’s family and loved ones,” a spokesperson said on Sunday.
“Rangers have closely monitored the pack of dingoes involved in the incident this week and have observed some aggressive behaviour.
“Following the initial autopsy findings, this pack’s involvement in the incident, and observations since, this pack has been deemed an unacceptable public safety risk.”
The spokesperson said the “dingoes involved in Monday’s incident will be humanely euthanised”.
“Public safety is our top priority, and this decision is informed and in the public interest,” the spokesperson said.
James’ heartbroken father, Todd James, confirmed his daughter’s body is set to be repatriated home to Canada .
He said James had adored nature and animals and would never have supported a dingo cull, but agreed urgent safety improvements are needed on the island.
Among the measures he wants considered are better training for island staff, mandatory carrying of dingo sticks, and even a ban on children younger than 13 visiting K’gari.
