Recent shakeups at CBS have left Gayle King’s role at the network uncertain in the eyes of the public — but the news anchor hit back at the rumors on Friday.
Her contract runs out in May 2026, meaning renewal negotiations will need to start shortly. According to a representative of CBS News, those conversations haven’t even begun yet. Individuals close to the situation told Variety that the overhaul at the station following the Paramount Skydance merger deal might land Gayle, 70, at a different post.
A representative told the publication, “There have been no discussions with Gayle about her contract that runs through May 2026. She’s a truly valued part of CBS and we look forward to engaging with her about the future.”
Gayle had a bit more of a positive approach to the situation, claiming she didn’t know where the rumors of a departure have come from.
As she left her studio on October 31, Gayle was pressed about her future career. She angrily told TMZ, “All I can say is this. From what I’m being told inside this building … All I’ve been told by everybody in this building is that they want me here. They like the job I’m doing. I like the job I’m doing.”

The news anchor reiterated that she liked both the work and the people she’s surrounded by. Plus, she noted that she’s tuning out the press and focusing purely on the conversations in the building. “What I’m not going to do is negotiate in the media. Not doing that,” she added.
If negotiations fail, Gayle has no current plans for the future. She explained that, for now, she’s “glad” to be at CBS and has “no idea” what the future would look like without the gig.

She admitted that there wasn’t a backup plan for her career since she doesn’t think she’ll be going anywhere(TMZ/X)
The reports of shakeups around Gayle’s job come as other moves at the news organization have been made. CBS Evening News anchor John Dickerson, 57, quit his role on the show without explanation.
He kept the farewell address vague on Instagram, writing, “Local news: At the end of this year, I will leave CBS sixteen years after I sat in as Face the Nation anchor for the first time. I am extremely grateful for all that CBS have me–the work, the audience’s attention and the honor of being a part of the network’s history–and I am grateful for my dear colleagues who’ve made me a better journalist and a better human. I will miss you.”

Other news anchors have left the network recently(TMZ/X)
CBS has been riddled with changes in the recent year, including the announcement that Stephen Colbert, 61, was booted from the network. His show, Late Night with Stephen Colbert, faces cancellation soon after being a known critic of the Trump administration.
In fact, he was vocal when the network reached a settlement with Trump regarding a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris.
