He may not have walked away with the American Idol Season 23 trophy, but John Foster has something arguably more powerful: a No. 1 hit, a voice that cuts straight to the soul, and a story fans are rallying behind.
In May, Foster’s heart-wrenching original single “Tell That Angel I Love Her” soared to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking a historic first for an Idol runner-up. It wasn’t just the song—it was the story behind it. Foster first debuted the track during his Top 20 solo performance, revealing it was written in honor of his best friend Maggie Dunn, who tragically died in a car accident on New Year’s Eve 2022.
“The moment I decided music was my thing was 1000 percent December 31, 2022,” Foster shared on the Fable House podcast. “Before that, I was just teetering around with the idea… but after losing Maggie, I sat down, and I wrote that song.”
With raw honesty, he described how his tears soaked his guitar that night. “I just did this,” he said. “God spoke through me and allowed me to put these words on this paper. And that was my moment.”
The Song That Changed Everything
Since Idol, Foster’s star hasn’t just risen—it’s rocketed. He’s writing nonstop, preparing for studio recordings, and heading back to Nashville to build on his momentum.
“I’m in talks with lots of people,” he said. “We’re going to make lots of music really soon. I think people are really going to like it.”
One of those “people” might just be country powerhouse Jelly Roll, who served as American Idol’s Season 23 artist-in-residence and quickly bonded with Foster.
When asked about a possible collaboration, Foster smiled:
“Maybe so… There’s a couple of different people coming at me from different directions. All great stuff. Nothing solid yet, but Jelly himself is just a really great dude. I’m fortunate to have built a relationship with him.”
Opry Debut and Homegrown Fame
On June 7, Foster took another major leap, debuting at the Grand Ole Opry with a stunning rendition of “How Great Thou Art” and a bold performance of “Murder on Music Row.” The 18-year-old Louisiana native stood in the sacred circle and declared:
“Country music is the best thing to have ever happened to this world.”
His appearance was so well received that the Opry invited him back—twice. One show will fall on his 19th birthday, July 9, and the other will see him share the stage with Jamey Johnson on August 21.
“Playing the @opry was one of the biggest honors of my life,” Foster wrote on Instagram. “Now, I get to celebrate my birthday there! And share the stage with one of my heroes, @jameyjohnsonofficial!”
Baton Rouge Homecoming Sells Out in Under an Hour
Foster’s love from fans isn’t limited to Nashville. His hometown concert in Baton Rouge, scheduled for August 2 at The Texas Club, sold out in less than an hour. A second show on August 1 was quickly added to meet demand.
As The Advocate reported, the 1,350-seat venue was overwhelmed with ticket requests, a testament to the local boy turned national star.
What’s Next for John Foster?
With a chart-topping debut single, sold-out shows, and the respect of country icons already under his belt, John Foster is a name to remember. He’s not just another Idol finalist—he’s living proof that heartbreak can spark greatness and that authenticity still wins in country music.
Whether he’s collaborating with Jelly Roll or writing his next tear-stained anthem, one thing is certain:
John Foster isn’t chasing the spotlight. He’s carrying it.
