Police are investigating whether a ute involved in a Queensland crash that left a mother-of-four was linked to a large hooning event on the same night.

A 51-year-old woman visiting from Victoria died after the Ford Focus hatchback she was travelling in collided head-on with a blue Ford Falcon ute on School Rd at Logan Reserve, south of Brisbane, about 9pm on Saturday.

Police believe the woman had been visiting family for the Easter holiday period.

The Focus was driven by her 28-year-old niece from Goodna. The two-year-old daughter of the niece was also in the Ford, strapped into her carseat in the back.

The driver was taken to Logan Hospital with injuries to her legs, hips and back.

Investigators allege the ute, driven by a 17-year-old girl, crossed onto the wrong side of the road before the crash.

Officers are now examining whether the vehicle had been involved in a nearby illegal hoon meet.

Earlier, hundreds of drivers and spectators had flooded Logan streets for the illegal gathering, with footage showing people hanging out of car windows and blocking roads.

Authorities say the event was already on their radar, with officers deployed in the area.

Witness Linton Bewley said the ute had been travelling at speed and without headlights moments before the collision.

“They overtook all three of us with no lights on,” he said.

“We didn’t hear them coming. We just saw them shoot straight past the driver’s side.

“Next thing, it’s just bang, bang, bang, bang.”

The 51-year-old woman died in the frontal collision.

Her niece and the toddler were treated at the scene, with the child found restrained in the back seat.

“The baby was in the back seat, still in the chair, crying, screaming. She was alert,” Bewley said.

Queensland Police Acting Inspector Peter Venz described the crash as a “tragic and avoidable incident” and extended condolences to the woman’s family.

“As far as I’m aware the (Ford Falcon) was not stolen,” he said.

“There are reports the vehicle had no number plates on and was possibly unregistered.”

Insp Venz said passengers in the ute were “ejected from the vehicle” and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

“The 17-year-old female driver of the utility was transported to Logan Hospital, where police have taken blood samples of that driver to test for any substances that may be on board,” he said.

“Look, it’s all good fun until a tragic incident occurs.

“This is obviously a tragic situation that really could have been avoided by just following the road rules and being considerate of other road users.”

Later that night, a social media post believed to be from the event’s organisers said the meet had been cancelled.

“Tonight is being called off, too red hot and too many incidents that can’t be shared yet. Go home and be safe,” the post read.

A second post sent “thoughts and prayers” to the Victorian woman’s loved ones.

The Forensic Crash Unit is continuing investigations.

Police have appealed for anyone who saw the Ford Falcon prior to the crash to come forward.

No charges have been laid at this stage.
