Former newspaper editor Piers Morgan was quizzed over a top BBC job.

Piers Morgan issued a blunt response when questioned about a major BBC job. The former Good Morning Britain presenter appeared on the BBC’s Newsnight on Monday, 24 November, and refused to confirm whether he will apply to become the next Director General of the BBC. It follows Tim Davie’s resignation from his position in early November 2025. His exit came after a Panorama documentary was found to have misled viewers by editing a speech by President Donald Trump. An article by The Telegraph reported a leaked BBC memo suggesting that the documentary had edited two parts of Trump’s speech, which made him appear to encourage the Capitol Hill riots in January 2021. With the major BBC role now vacant, Piers dodged the question on Newsnight when asked by a fellow guest whether he would apply for the job. He simply said “no comment.”

One person in the comments section quipped: “He’ll walk out if any of the weather presenters ask him an awkward question.”

A second person said: “@piersmorgan do it!” However, another person argued: “I doubt it. I seriously doubt it.”

Following the scandal, Donald Trump threatened to sue the BBC for between $1 billion and $5 billion. The BBC confirmed it has received a letter from President Trump and would “respond directly in due course”. The BBC later apologised to Trump.

Last week on Newsnight, politician Jacob Rees-Mogg said he supported Trump’s right to sue the BBC. He also said that “anybody in his country would feel entitled to sue the BBC for libel if something was put out in such a dishonest way”.

The former Conservative Cabinet Minister argued that the BBC should settle with President Trump. The Financial Times’ Gillian Tett was also on the show and pointed out the number of other organisations that Trump has threatened legal action against, in addition to the BBC.

The pair also clashed over their views on censorship in the US, and at one point, Jacob repeatedly asked Gillian questions about her views on Joe Biden, but host Victoria Derbyshire was forced to step in and tell him off as he didn’t let her reply. She said: “Let her at least finish one of your questions!”

Deborah Turness, the chief executive of BBC News, also stepped down from her role amid the scandal.
