Schilling, a respected psychologist and dating coach known for her warm yet straight-talking advice on the Australian version of the hit reality show, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones.
Her husband, Gareth Brisbane, shared the devastating news on her Instagram account with an emotional statement that has moved fans to tears.
“Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling passed away peacefully today, surrounded by love,” he wrote.
“In her final moments, when I thought cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she ushered me closer and whispered a message for Maddie and me that will sustain me for the rest of my life. It took all of her remaining strength, and that gesture summed up our wee Melsie perfectly. Even then, her only thought was for Maddie and me.”

The couple’s 10-year-old daughter, Maddie, was at the heart of Gareth’s tribute. He described Mel as an “incredible mum, role model, and soulmate,” noting she became a new mother and TV star at 42 — and “nailed both.”
Schilling was first diagnosed with colon cancer in December 2023. She underwent surgery to remove a tumour the size of a lemon and initially received the all-clear. However, the disease returned, spreading to her lungs and, in early March 2026, to the left side of her brain.
In an emotional Instagram post on March 12, she bravely told fans she did not know how long she had left, urging others to get checked if something didn’t feel right. Despite 16 rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, her oncology team confirmed there were no further treatment options.

Her MAFS colleagues were left devastated. Long-time expert John Aiken, who worked with Mel since season eight, shared a raw tribute:
“It’s with great sadness and heavy heart that today I lost my dear friend and fellow MAFS expert Mel Schilling. I am heartbroken, devastated and finding it hard to breathe… MAFS won’t be the same without her.”
Alessandra Rampolla, who joined the expert panel in 2021, posted: “My heart is shattered.” She shared fond memories, calling Mel her “chica” and “big sister,” and expressed gratitude for their final visit together.

Channel 9 and the MAFS production team released a statement saying Mel was “a wonderful colleague and friend” and “a big part of our family.” They confirmed an on-air tribute will honour her memory as the current season continues.
Throughout her illness, Schilling showed remarkable courage. Gareth revealed she never complained, even on days when chemotherapy left her barely able to lift her head from the pillow. She continued filming and bringing her signature empathy and wisdom to struggling couples on the couch.
Beyond the show, Mel was a qualified psychologist passionate about helping people find healthy love. She split her time between Australia and the UK, appearing on both versions of the global franchise.
Fans and celebrities have flooded social media with tributes, remembering her radiant smile, sharp insights, and genuine kindness. Many have echoed her final public message, calling for greater awareness of bowel cancer — one of Australia’s most common but preventable cancers when detected early.

Gareth Brisbane ended his statement by encouraging others to “live life to the full” in Mel’s honour. He described the privilege of standing by her side through it all and celebrated the beautiful, if cruel, life they shared.
Mel Schilling is survived by her husband Gareth and their daughter Maddie.
She will be remembered as the warm-hearted expert who guided countless couples with compassion, the fierce fighter who faced cancer with grace, and the devoted mother and wife whose final thoughts were only of her family.
The MAFS couch has lost one of its brightest lights. Rest in peace, Mel — your message of love and strength will live on.
