More than three decades after the horrific murder of two-year-old James Bulger shocked Britain, his mother, Denise Fergus, has spoken out once again — and her words have shaken the nation to its core.
Through tears, Denise revealed that she is preparing to take legal action that could send one of her son’s killers, Jon Venables, back to prison. “I can put him back behind bars — for my little boy,” she said, her voice breaking. “I’ve waited half my life for this… and I won’t stop until he’s where he belongs.”

The pain that began on that February day in 1993 has never truly left her. For years, Denise has fought tirelessly for justice — campaigning against Venables’ repeated release from custody and demanding accountability for the system that, in her view, has protected him more than it has protected the public.
Venables and Robert Thompson were only ten years old when they abducted and murdered James after leading him away from a shopping centre in Bootle, Merseyside. Both were convicted, served eight years, and were granted lifelong anonymity upon release in 2001. But Venables has since been re-imprisoned twice for possessing child abuse images, reigniting outrage and reopening old wounds.
Now, with Venables once again eligible for parole, Denise Fergus is determined to make sure history doesn’t repeat itself. “He’s had chance after chance, and every time, he’s proven he’s still a danger,” she said. “I’m not doing this out of hate — I’m doing this because my son deserves peace.”
Her latest appeal has reignited national debate over whether lifelong anonymity should continue to protect convicted child killers, especially those who reoffend. Public sentiment, overwhelmingly on her side, is demanding stricter parole conditions and greater transparency.
Despite decades of grief, Denise’s resolve remains unbroken. “This isn’t about revenge,” she said quietly. “It’s about justice — for James, for me, and for every parent who’s ever lost a child and been told to move on. You don’t move on. You fight. And I’ll keep fighting until the end.”
Her strength — forged in unimaginable tragedy — continues to remind the world that a mother’s love doesn’t fade with time. If anything, it only grows more powerful.
