The Masked Singer worker reveals huge part of show is completely fake – and ITV bosses use a genius trick to cover their tracks
Someone who works on The Masked Singer has revealed a huge part of the show is completely fake – and there’s a genius trick ITV bosses use to cover their tracks.
The seventh series of the popular programme, hosted by Joel Dommett, returned to our screens earlier this month and fans are already obsessing over trying to figure out who the famous faces are behind the costumes.
So far, Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon, 69, has been revealed as Yak, rapper Professor Green, 42, was Teabag and The One Show’s Alex Jones, 48, was revealed Disc Jockey.
Last weekend, fans were stunned when singer Marcella Detroit, 73, lifted the head of Gargoyle, meaning that Moth, Red Panda, Sloth, Can of Worms, Conkers, Artic Fox, Toasie and Monkey Business are still in the game.
A TikTok user, who goes by the name of aianxiety.thechallenge, has taken to the social media platform to share some insider knowledge with fans.
He said: ‘The audience isn’t actually there for The Masked Singer.

He captioned his video: ‘The audience isn’t actually there for The Masked Singer. ‘Before every unmasking the whole audience is removed. That moment is the biggest leak risk of the entire show’
‘Before every unmasking the whole audience is removed. That moment is the biggest leak risk of the entire show.
‘And all the cheering you hear? That’s recorded earlier and added in the edit.
‘The reveal itself happens in near silence and the judge’s reactions are real. The only thing that is fake is the audience.’
And he captioned the TikTok: ‘The biggest moment on The Masked Singer is faked! This is how TV actually works, to protect the secret.’
Many in the comments section were shocked by the revelation, but one pointed out: ‘Most of the audience do go – BUT they keep some that back that have certain tickets/ I went to the spooky one that has just been broadcast’.’
He replied: ‘This is correct. Apologies for the sloppy semantics! I meant the audience as a whole.

Many rushed to the comments section on the TikTok to share how they agreed with what he had said
‘When certain people are allowed to stay, it’s called a “closed set”, which categorically, in TV terms means “A production environment in which access is restricted to only essential personnel during filming.”’
Others said: ‘He’s telling the truth. I was in the audience a couple of years ago.’
‘I knew this, my friend went to watch it filmed a year or so ago and told us.’
‘Yes, totally correct. I was an audience member for the episode in the 2nd series on the night, it turns out, Heather Small was evicted. The audience gets ushered out after the last performance of the night.’
‘this is true been there to see for myself.’
‘yes only audience is ones near stage rest gets removed.’
‘Yes, I’ve been in the audience.’
It comes after some very entertaining performances on Saturday night, Sloth and Gargoyle landed themselves in the bottom two.
Fighting for their place in the competition, Sloth performed a version of the 1979 song Flash Bang Wallop by Tommy Steele while Gargoyle gave their take on Bad Reputation by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts.
Sadly it was Gargoyle who was sent home, with the judges guessing it could be Cindy Lauper, Joan Jett, Wendy James, Ruby Wax, or Fiona Bruce.
But they were all wrong, with Gargoyle finally being unmasked as Marcella Detroit from Shakespears Sister.

Viewers were in shock at the reveal, writing: ‘Marcella Detroit!! WOW! I wouldn’t have guessed her.’
‘The voice totally makes sense now! I knew I bl***y recognised it!’
‘Wow no wonder she can sing.’
‘MY MUM SAID MARCELLA! I had no idea, but she knew!!’
‘NO FRICKIN WAY.’
Asked how she felt about leaving the competition, Marcella said: ‘I’m really sad to go. It’s been an incredible experience. Everyone has been so nice and so much fun. Very helpful, really kind.
‘I got the offer at the beginning of the summer and my husband is British and we have wanted to come back to England for quite some time. My husband has been wonderful in that he has come to live with me in America for a few decades, but he was missing his homeland and we’ve been saying after the pandemic happened, we really want to get back to England and spend some time there.
‘Then we got this opportunity, the universe just put it in our laps, we were like “oh my god, this is so perfect”. So that was one of the reasons and I also thought it would be so much fun.’
However viewers were left baffled by the ITV show’s Spooktacular Special.
Fans shared their confusion on X about the show’s ‘weird’ decision to do a Halloween theme in January.

This weekend the judging panel, and their special guest, all looked unrecognisable as they donned very spooky outfits.
Host Joel Dommett opening the show in a Wednesday costume while special judge Ben Shephard dressed up as The Wizard Of Oz’s Scarecrow.
Judge Maya Jama wowed in a plunging black gown while Davina McCall rocked a see-through catsuit.
And Jonathan Ross, 65, pulled out all the stops to make sure he looked just like Frankenstein.
With green face paint, matching latex gloves and a silver suit, the broadcaster looked worlds away from his usual self.
Funnyman Mo Gilligan, 37, looked very different dressed up in a Teen Wolf inspired outfit consisting of a bomber jacket, checkered shirt and a pair of converse.

Last week viewers were left stunned when John Lydon was revealed as Yak.
Monkey Business and Yak faced off in a sing-off in front of the panellists, however Yak failed to secure enough votes to remain in the competition and was ultimately eliminated by the judges after performing Olivia Newton-John‘s 80s hit Physical.
Following the unveiling, viewers flocked to X, formerly Twitter, to express their shock at John appearing on the show.
Fans wrote: ‘Wow, I didn’t think that the cow on the Masked Singer was going to be Johnny Rotten!!’
‘Just watched John on the masked singer. he was bl***y brilliant.’
‘The fact that the lead singer of the sex pistols has just been on tv dressed as a yak is pretty mind blowing and what makes The Masked Singer so good.’
‘Who’d a thought. John Lydon on the masked singer.’
The week before Matt Lucas was revealed to be Emperor Penguin on Sunday night’s show.
The comedian, 51, impressed fans with his vocal chords during his performance with a band, before joining the judging panel as a guest.

And it was a double unmasking after Teabag was voted out and was revealed to be rapper Professor Green, 42.
Viewers took to X to applaud Matt for his ‘amazing voice’ – after the judges incorrectly guessed it was Peter Andre, Bradley Walsh or Sir Trevor McDonald behind the mask.
They wrote: ‘I’m shocked Matt Lucas was Emperor Penguin. I didn’t even think of him. He’s got some good pipes on him.’
‘People who don’t know Matt Lucas can sing when he’s literally in Les Miserables regularly!’
‘Matt Lucas has an amazing voice.’
‘My flabbers are ghasted.’
After his reveal Matt said he decided to be a penguin, because ‘I like a chocolate biscuit’.
Of his experience, he added: ‘It was very, very hot indeed. I thought the guesses were pretty poor.’
