Chaz Bono is a married man!

Chaz, Cher’s son with the late Sonny Bono, married Shara Blue Mathes at The Hollywood Roosevelt hotel in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 8. The dress code was “Hollywood Glam Formal,” according to their wedding website.

The couple’s relationship goes back decades, with the pair having met as teenagers at Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute. Their life journeys continued over the years until they eventually reconnected and made their romance official in January 2017.

“I first met Shara more than 40 years ago when we were just teenagers,” Chaz, 57, exclusively tells PEOPLE. “I think it’s safe to say that not many grooms ultimately end up marrying the very first girl they ever kissed so many years later.”

He continues, “She makes me feel complete knowing she will always be there beside me as partner, my best friend, and the love of my life. No matter what life brings us, we will always be safer and stronger together … and we are home.”

For their big day, Chaz wore a classic tuxedo with a black bow tie and a purple calla lily boutonnière. Meanwhile, his bride opted for a long-sleeved lace wedding dress. She wore her dark hair down in soft curls, and held a lush bouquet featuring vibrant purple orchids and other deep-toned flowers.

Cher, 79, looked on from the front row as the couple took a romantic dip at the end of the black aisle, which was lined with glowing red candles and moody floral arrangements. The Burlesque star is also a mother to son Elijah Allman, 49, whose father is Cher’s late ex-husband, Gregg Allman.

The wedding was planned by Natalie Sofer.

The newlyweds plan to celebrate their marriage with a honeymoon in Hawaii, per their Honeyfund website.

Mathes is a mother to 25-year-old son Cooper from a previous relationship.

Chaz and Mathes have a close bond with Cher. Most recently in December, the pair supported the singer-actress at the Saban Theater in Beverly Hills, California, where she was discussing her book, Cher: The Memoir, Part 1. Back in October 2024, the trio stepped out together on the red carpet at the Beyond Fest premiere of Little Bites, a horror film executive produced by Cher and Chaz.

Cher has been supportive of Chaz over the years. A source told PEOPLE that after screening his 2011 documentary, Becoming Chaz, which documented his gender transition, Cher told a friend, “I admire my son Chaz’s courage for sharing his personal journey. Most important to me is that he is very happy. That’s what I care about the most. He has my love and support.”
