THIS is the terrifying moment a cowboy builder leads cops on a high speed chase through a golf course before killing a mum-of-three in a horror hit-and-run.

John McDonald, 52, drove “without care for anyone”, on the wrong side of the road, reaching speeds of 70mph in a 30mph zone and ramming police vehicles on April 11 last year.

McDonald’s 12 minute chase came to a tragic end when he struck 62-year-old Suzanne Cherry, who was enjoying a game of golf at Aston Wood Golf Club, in Sutton, Birmingham.

Terrifying footage of the chase shows McDonald crashing into several vehicles, including one carrying an an 11-month-old baby, as he fled pursuing officers.

Video played in court also shows the grey van ramming a police car several times “no doubt trying to disable it”, Prosecutor Michael Burrows KC said.

McDonald then drove the van up a grassy embankment and onto the golf course where Suzanne was playing with her husband.

Clinton Harrison, Suzanne’s husband, said he watched on in “helpless horror” as McDonald’s Nissan van ploughed into his partner.

Suzanne was airlifted to hospital after the horrific smash and had her leg amputated in surgery as doctors battled to save her life.

Sadly, despite the best efforts of medics, she passed away from her injuries four days later.

Mr Harrison said he tried alerting his wife to the oncoming van, shouting “Sue” as loud as he could but added that his wife could “not possibly have got out of the way – there just wasn’t time to react.”

As he watched, three men get out of the van and fled on foot – Mr Harrison said.

He shouted “you b******s have killed my wife” as the trio ran away from the scene.

Mr Harrison added that the driver “actually stepped over Sue as he ran from the van.”

Suzanne’s grieving husband added: “I was just screaming so I knew they would have my screams ringing in their ears for the rest of their lives.”

Cowboy builder McDonald, who did not have a driving licence and could not read or write, admitted causing death by dangerous driving on Monday.

McDonald of Bloxwich, who looked at the floor in the dock throughout the hearing and held a tissue in his hand, also pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud in relation to roofing work between February and April last year.

His son, Johnny McDonald, 23, of Dudley, and Brett Delaney, 35, of Darlaston, Walsall, who were in the van at the time of the crash, also pleaded guilty to the conspiracy to commit fraud charge.

Worcester Crown Court was told the three men defrauded elderly victims out of tens of thousands of pounds together.

The group would swindle cash from their victims to cover shoddy roof work and repairs that did not need doing.

On the day of the tragic crash, the court was told the trio were following one of their victims to a cash machine so she could take out money to pay them.

They were spotted by two officers in a marked police car who gave chase when the group fled.

Over the next 12 minutes the officers pursued the van, which was being driven by McDonald.

Suzanne’s husband said he and his wife started off their game of golf as they usually did “with a peck on the cheek.”

He went on to say that as the van careered towards his wife the driver made no attempt to brake.

Mr Harrison added that huge teams of paramedics descended on the scene, carrying out several interventions so that his wife could be taken to hospital safely.

Suzanne suffered multiple rib fractures, torn carotid arteries and lacerations to her liver and spleen.

She underwent an emergency blood transfusion before being taken to hospital where CT scans showed serious brain damage.

Her loved ones sobbed in the public gallery as the list of injuries she had sustained were read out.

McDonald, his son and Delaney were arrested days after the crash and initially charged with manslaughter, which they denied.

Delaney, who yawned throughout Monday’s hearing, said he had closed his eyes during the chase.

Mr Harrison read a moving victim impact statement to the court, saying: “I stand before you today not as a man seeking vengeance but as a man who has had the very foundation of his life destroyed.”

Through tears he added: “They have lost a person who would cheer on their careers and stand beside them at every major event of their life.

“They stole every single future milestone she deserved to witness.”

He said his wife was “killed on a peaceful golf course, an innocent bystander in the wake of these criminals attempting to escape their own poor choices.”

“They valued their temporary freedom more than her right to live.” Mr Harrison concluded.

The court was told that all three men accused have previous convictions; they will be sentenced on Tuesday.
