THE body of a grandad has been discovered 10 days after he was cruelly kidnapped and tortured in a case of mistaken identity in Australia.

Police found human remains about 30miles away from where pensioner Chris Baghsarian was snatched from his home in Sydney.

Investigators believe the grandfather was taken hostage on February 13 in a bungled kidnapping as a result of mistaken identity.

He was allegedly forced into a dark-coloured SUV in the early hours of the morning from his home in North Ryde by a group of masked intruders.

It is then believed he was taken to a property in Dural and beaten, before being forced to film a horrific hostage video.

The tape was allegedly directed by a local gangland figure and was circulated through New South Wales‘ underworld.

Detective Acting Superintendent Andrew Marks said he suspected the remains found near Linwood Golf Club in Pitt Town belonged to the OAP, but cops are yet to make a formal identification.

“I have spoken to the family of Mr Baghsarian, and as you can understand, they are deeply upset,” the top cop said.

“They have requested that you respect their privacy in this time.”

Det Marks said the family were devastated, explaining: “This is not the world they live in, it’s taken them by shock.”

Police also appealed for information about a grey Toyota which was seen “very close” to the golf course where the grim discovery was made.

“We are aware that the vehicle that we made an appeal on yesterday was in that vicinity at 5pm on Saturday 14 February, two weekends ago,” Detective Marks said.

Investigators forensically linked the car to the botched kidnapping, which was found torched in the city’s west.

The 2022 model Toyota Corolla was found burnt out in Westmead on Monday night.

The grey Corolla had Victorian registration plates 12Z2BU and was allegedly stolen on February 13.

Police say the car had cloned number plates DVT 007 before it was found partially burnt-out.

Detective Marks said police would use “every resource” to find those responsible.

“I speak for not only the police but the public in general that we’re outraged this is happening and the recklessness of these people,” he said.

“What I can say is that endeavour and use every resource that we have to identify responsible and bring them before the courts.”

Police discovered a “makeshift stronghold” at an abandoned property in Dural, where they believe Baghsarian was held.

Detective Marks told reporters they believed he had been held there “at some stage” during the kidnapping.

He said the property, which was located back from the street, was “derelict” and uninhabited.

“Nobody lives there,” he said.

“It was a suspicious house among other properties in that area that led us to that premises.”

Police said they’d spent the past few days patrolling paddocks in Glenorie, about 15 minutes from where police found the human remains.

It comes after the true target of the kidnapping was revealed to be relatives of Dimitri Stepanyan – a self-described entrepreneur and one-time criminal, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Stepanyan who apparently used to live on the same street as Baghsarian.

His family allegedly received a video of Baghsarian as a hostage with bound hands and a covered face.

However, the target’s family did not recognise Baghsarian, and sent a response.

“Dumb dumb error, how did use (sic) get the wrong house,” a text message sent to the kidnappers read.

“My old man would have blown your head off,” another read.

Another message to the kidnappers read: “Good luck, one of your team will give you up.”

Police said Baghsarian was allegedly gagged and beaten up during the bungled and terrifying gang extortion plot.

He had been alone in his North Ryde home when his captors descended onto his property.

Det Andrew Marks said last week: “They took Mr Baghsarian whilst he was at home, in his bedroom of his family home, and they took him and bundled him into a car and took him away to a location that we do not know.

“Police consider that Mr Baghsarian was not the intended target. You have the wrong person.”

Horror footage showed Baghsarian with his hands tied while gagged and lying on the floor.

There appeared to be blood on the carpet under the kidnapped elderly man.

Det Marks added: “If there’s a member of the kidnapping crew that has any common decency, to tell us where he is, you tell us where he is, we’ll do the rest.”

Three people are believed to be involved in the kidnapping.
