Australia has been plunged into collective grief tonight after beloved comedian, actress and national treasure Magda Szubanski released a deeply moving final message from her hospital bed, marking what many fear is the end of her courageous battle with stage four Mantle Cell Lymphoma.
In a video posted to her Instagram shortly after 8pm AEDT, Magda, 64, appeared frail but composed, surrounded by family and close friends. With tears in her eyes, she addressed her fans directly:
“Thank you for every single message, every card, every prayer… you carried me through the darkest days. I’m so grateful. And now… thank you and goodbye.”

The words, delivered in her signature warm and honest tone, have since been viewed more than 4 million times. The post, accompanied by a single black-and-white photograph of Magda smiling at the camera, has sparked an outpouring of love, memories and heartbreak across the country.
Magda first revealed her diagnosis in May 2025, describing the rare and aggressive blood cancer as “one of the nasty ones.” Throughout her treatment — including intensive chemotherapy, immunotherapy and experimental trials — she shared occasional updates with her trademark humour and vulnerability, becoming a symbol of resilience for thousands of Australians facing similar battles.
In her final message, Magda spoke of the overwhelming support that had sustained her: “You made me feel seen, loved and never alone. That’s the greatest gift anyone can give.” She also thanked her medical team, her partner Magda Szubanski, her sister and extended family, and the Australian public, saying: “You’ve been my army. I’m so proud to have been part of this country.”
Tributes have flooded in from across the entertainment industry and beyond. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called her “a national treasure whose courage and kindness touched every corner of Australia.” Comedian and friend Adam Hills posted: “Magda fought like hell and laughed through the pain. The world is dimmer tonight.”
Fans shared memories of Magda’s iconic roles in Kath & Kim, Fast Forward, and her tireless advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights and animal welfare. Many highlighted her openness about her journey, saying her final words were a fitting goodbye from someone who never shied from truth.
As Australia mourns, the loss feels personal to millions. Magda Szubanski — actress, activist, survivor — leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love and unbreakable spirit.
Rest in peace, Magda. Thank you for everything.
